If there were no more fires, and criminals were stopped, and crime down, it might be worth it.
But . . .

Senior Los Angeles fire captain Jason Getchius had a salary of $169,764 in 2022, the latest figures provided by the city. But by racking up $502,681 in overtime pay, he was able to earn an eye-popping total of $792,467.
Even at double time, not 1.5, that OT is 59 hours. Is it even somewhat believable this guy worked 100 hours every single week, all year long?! Every single week?! Maybe the city/State should audit some of these claims, because I highly doubt those numbers are real..

I don’t know about these particular cases, but it is a well established trick to do this in the last year before retirement to spike the pension at stratospheric levels. This requires the collusion of supervisors, but since they are all in on the scam, collusion is routine. The federal formula is one percent of an employee’s high three.
Which is a stupid way to do it. Should be highest three of base salary only. OT should have no effect on pension!

Some places, your retirement calculations can be based on OT as well so you get someone making $500,000 with OT and then collecting 70-75% of their salary in retirement. Lots of companies are changing their rules that retirement is based on base salary, not including any OT.

California has always been overpaying public “servants” because of top down mismanagement and corruption.. Then they hijack money from crooked Dems in other states.

Heroes one and all. Nothing is enough for our brave selfless public servants.Especially those who so gleefully enforce every last covid directive, no matter how insane or blatantly unconstitutional.

From the article you cite:
...leading to a growing $21 billion unemployment benefits loan from the federal government the state is unable to pay down. While the state seeks loan forgiveness from the Acting United States Secretary of Labor ...
Red state conservatives like to gloat at blue state problems, but blue states have a way of shifting their problems onto the entire nation.
