Gulf of Mexico:

FAA flight ban extends to offshore helicopter activity for the oil industry, so our transportation is essentially shut down. I'm stuck here!

So many people lined up to donate blood in Phoenix that many had to be sent home. The blood facilities are overwhelmed with donations.

Gov. Jane Hull was broadcast saying that the West is not threatened. However, government workers can go home if they wish. The highway over the Hoover Dam is closed. The Palo Verde nuclear power station is locked down. The airport (Sky Harbor) is a ghost town. Airplanes are not allowed next to the terminal. Media are kept away.

My email is slow today but everywhere people are crying for the victims. Pearl Harbor was a military installation. These people were defenseless. This is war.

Many businesses closed or closing. Schools open but no extracurricular activities.

Oklahoma City... Airport closed. Massive run on gas stations. Rumor is that refineries have been shut down and gas prices will sky rocket. Lines are 30 minutes to buy gas anywhere in the city.

Richmond, Virginia - Word has gone out that there is a nationwide call for gathering to pray between 8:00 and 8:30 tonight. Malls closed. MCV hospital helipad prepared to receive injuries from the Pentagon incident if necessary. I was on my way to give blood, but heard on the radio that all of the donation centers are swamped. Malls will be setting up tomorrow through Friday for special blood drives. Saw city police staking out the CSX railroad yards. Carriers from Norfolk/Hampton Roads sent adjacent to DC and NY to secure the areas. Naval base areas buttoned up tight. Got a call this morning from my younger brother, who lives in Brooklyn and works in the West Village in NYC. He said they watched the whole thing from their 8th floor office windows about 30 blocks away. Said that people were already very panicky in the streets. Shortly after I hung up with him, the buildings collapsed.

Suburbia is fairly normal. Lack of a single plane is strange.
I saw a CalTrans truck driving in a wash, and firetrucks out of their stations. At least two major buildings in Downtown were evacuated.

Montgomery County, Maryland (most important DC area suburb, located on north/northwest border of the Nation's Capital):

Local police have issued "community alerts" and increased patrols.

Local schools closed 1 1/2 hours early (for no apparent good reason).

All federal government agencies closed around noon today.

Maryland state government neglecting West Nile Virus epidemic, which has spread to local citizens now.

Liberals, gun control freaks and other gun-haters wringing their hands while waiting for government (protection?) help.

Traffic is unusually light.

I'm headed out to run a few errands and do some shopping now...

People are SCARED. My MIL was to have furniture delivered today. The furniture store had a recording on their answering machine stating that 75% of their employees had stayed home due to the events of today. This is in Phoenix. Husband reports there is very little traffic on the streets. A business trip scheduled for me by my home office was scuttled.

This was a huge psychological blow to the American public.

Canadian Border (New Brunswick, Edmondston) & Maine

Customs are checking trunks and opening doors at border crossing. Traffic is flowing slowly but it is flowing. In fact, no huge back up on the bridge.

People are stunned right now and have not moved out of that stage yet. Myself included.

I am a pediatrician that works in strategic consulting for the pharmaceutical industry. I work in midtown New York. After the attack I went to volunteer my services at St. Clare's Hospital on 9th Ave and 51st Street. Two other pediatricians came over here also--one pediatric cardiologist from Holland who was here for a meeting and a developmental pediatrician from Syracuse, NY. We are awaiting patients at this time.

So far, only a few patients from the WTC have arrived: a fireman that was treated and released (his buddy disappeared beneatha collapsed building) and a guy who walked down from the 84th floor and had a heart attack.

A NY cop that i spoke to downstairs said that they had set up a triage area downtown to deal with patients outside of the WTC when the building collapsed on them.

Also, they were sending in groups of cops and firemen in at ten at a time before the collapse--many of the rescue workers were evidently lost.

I will post more as soon as I know more and can.

Indianapolis, Indiana Mile-long lines at gas stations. Gas prices near $4.00/gallon. 60 Airplanes that arrived at Indy Int'l Airport are grounded, including a plane that was traveling from Canada to Mexico. People without an American passport cannot get off the plane.

Pretty normal here in Montana. A bank downtown was evacuated due to a suspicious package that turned out to be nothing. Schools in session, stores open, Gubmint workers working. Flag in front of the Federal Reserve Bank at half mast.

Peoria, Illinois.

Federal and county courthouses are bristling with armed security guards. Caterpillar has its world HQ next to the county courthouse, and it is also bristling with armed security. During the Cold war, Peoria was believed to be #4 on the list of targets for the Soviets to hit, after Omaha (HQ of Strategic Air Command), Washington and New York, due to the presence of Caterpillar's world HQ and its two largest factories. We produce all the Caterpillar diesels that power tanks, trucks and other vehicles.

Newport, Maine (20 minutes south of Bangor), all looks calm in the streets. Gov. King evacuated all state offices, bases are closed from incoming traffic, local school had a few parents remove their kids, many parents called the school, KMart stopped selling firearms, though Walmart is still selling them. That's all so far...

Reporting in from WNY...

New York State: Governor Pataki has called out the National Guard for duty in the City.

Colleges, schools, universities shut down.

Shopping centers, etc shut down.

Primary elections postponed until further notice.

Just total, absolute shock on the part of everyone I have talked to today.

Several of my African students getting their news in French over the internet...hugging each other in shock etc. etc
