Well, we just transitioned over from the @home network to the comcast servers. Previously, we had used 2 IPs on the cablemodem, paid for them and all, but now, we can only get one machine on the network at a time. Tech support (lol) says "Oh, the server is down, that's why you can't get on..." They've transferred me to @home (who can't help since I'm no longer in their domain), and last night, I finally called and told them "Get a supervisor." Forty minutes later, I'm on the phone with Craig, who says "Oh, we're not guaranteeing shared cable modems until the end of February...but you won't be charged for two IP addresses."
Thinking seriously about setting up a server on an old box I've got and hubbing out to the neighbors and their neighbors.....

I still get AOL CDs, and now they say service is "faster". Does that mean dialup customers don't get dropped as often as they used to? Faster dialup connections or downloads? Any of that?
Just curious.

You can get the EXACT same poor service and access numbers at Walmart WMCONNECT.COM for $9.95
instead of $23.95. The lower price makes the pain more bearable; the product is the same.

I don't know what I hate worse -- AOL or Microsoft. My children downloaded AOL instant messenger, which continues to reset itself as a start item no matter how many times I go into msconfig to fix it. The true computer Anti-Christ is Microsoft Money 2002, however. Not only will it change all of your Money and Quicken files into files that can only be ready by Money 2002, without asking, but (a) it interlaces with Explorer so that a window pops up and tells you if you can afford to purchase items you see on the internet, (b) according to First Union, it attaches itself in some way to your customer ID number at the bank so that you cannot later switch to Quicken. First Union is having to set up a new profile for me, and can no longer use my Social Security number in connection with computer banking unless I use Microsoft Money 2002. Their words, not mine. Basically, Bill Gates now owns my social security number for computer banking purposes, unless I change banks. According to the First Union rep I spoke with yesterday, they have a special task force trying to figure out just what all Money 2002 does to their computer banking system, and how to combat it.

Good advice. I am considering getting a router for a hardware firewall.

I used to have A.O.L. and could never shake the feeling that some bug eyed little worm was in there somewhere checking everywhere and anywhere I went. Like a big experiment they just seemed to try to shape my pop up commercials for which it seemed endless crap. A.O.L. as a inet service provider sucks. Just seemed like big brother.
