I agree. FR hypocricy aside, Bush is going to have a devil of a time with this economy. He can't do much about it. Tax cuts are always nice, but the federal, state, local, corporate, and personal debt will still have to be addressed.
He was elected at a time when the markets are going south. Nothing is going to stop it. Anyone who believes that anything short of a Cayman style tax system is going to help is smoking some serious Rush Limbaugh crack.
As long as we have Urban America leeching off the rest of us, and more and more illegals driving up the cost of health care, insurance, and public education we are going nowhere in a big hurry.
Our economy is based upon consumption not production. It has been that way for an entire generation. Yes, we are more prosporous, but it is the same prosperity of quitting your job to become a day-trader, borrowing a bunch of money and going on a spending spree. As long as cheap debt is available, the system works. Eventually, the bills must be paid. That's what is happening.
The FED stated that they will cut rates to 0 and then print money to buy Treasuries. Folks, that spells inflation, and no nation has ever flourished long-term by burning their currency. There is a reason The Founders put gold and silver as our currency. There is a reason Hitler counterfieted Pound-notes.
Our welfare state begets high taxes which beget inflation. You simply can't pay people not to work.
On another note, I noticed that you mentioned President Kerry. Rush already has the theme music, and the demon - BIG KETCHUP!!! Expect FReepers to hate ketchup like they hate unions. I would also expect Louisiana sugar to be demonized in the near future.

If a 30 mortgage is good, then a 50 year is better. If people ever get a dose of reality of what they have done to their futures and stop spending, the economy is duck soup. The day of reckoning is getting closer and it doesn't make any difference who is sitting in the Oval Office.

It will make a difference to the one in the Oval Office.
Election '00 and '02 will, IMHO, be the best things to happen to the 'RATS since The Great Depression. Whenever America rings up a lot of debt, and gets the appearance of prosperity, they vote in the Pubbies, thinking the good times will keep on rolling.
BANG!
The bills come due and the party is over. Guess who gets the blame? Yes, the Pubbies. Guess who gets the credit for cleaning it up? The 'RATS. It's all timing.
In fact, my lifetime has seen booms and busts of economic cycles. Carter and Reagan were the exceptions to the trend. "Good" times happened in 61-68, 83-89, 94-00. "Bad" times happened in 72-82, 90-93, 01-pres. With the exception of Carter and Reagan, 'RATS were in the WH during more good times than bad, and the opposite for Pubbies.
Playing "Pin your hopes on the economy" is a dangerous game for Pubbies. I think we are about to be shown that in a big way.
That's OK, we will just borrow more money, print more money, spend more money, export more manufacturing, import more Mexicans, and import more Chicom crap. If you are over 50, you don't care.

O'Niel and Lindsey were not the problem, therefore replacing them is not the solution.
You can't wave a magic wand and make the debt, overvaluation, and loss of manufacturing go away.

Paying attention to their rank speculation is a waste of time.

Actually, Hermann, it won't. Your tax burden will decrease.
Read the legislation, easily available here:
http://thomas.loc.gov
H.R. 2525 and H.R. 2717 are both relatively short and easy to read -- they are written in "layman's language," at least as much "layman's langueage" as can be expected for a document written by lawyers!

If my federal income tax burden in a few years is going to be zero, how can you say it will decrease further with the NRST?
I am unaware of any refund plan for the national retail sales tax which will grant enough per person to make my liability zero.

LOL!!! A SIREN has SOUND DRUDGE flashes a LIGHT but we always call it a siren LOL!!!
To: Hermann the Cherusker; *Taxreform
The income tax will be abolished, so you will have not ANY federal income tax burden.
You will pay taxes, but your overall federal tax burden will decrease, if the pols do the right thing by their constitutients. That is, if they enact a broad-based low rate consumption tax with no loopholes and no exemptions which essentially un-taxes business and repeals the hidden federal taxes we all pay.
There is a right way to do this and a wrong way. Left to their own devices, the pols will either do nothing or make the tax system worse.
To PREVENT THAT FROM HAPPENING, We the People must be vigilant. We must cause our elected representatives to fear for their jobs if they do not submit to OUR will. And then, keep our promise when they test the limits of their ability to snooker us.
The show stopper we are faced with, is that at this juncture, not enough Americans have been convinced that we can do hold the pols accountable and force them to our will.
But, we outnumber them -- 280 odd million to 537. We can force them to our will, but we have to believe and make our fellow citizens believe that we can do this, and that is the difficulty we face right now.
We need to convince a "critical mass" of the American that they be economically, politically and socially better off with a NRST, and then cause them to convince their elected representatives that their job depends on doing the will of the people.
What I'd urge you to do is visit
http://www.salestax.org ,
http://www.fairtax.org and
http://www.cats.org . Each of these web sites offers a plethora of information, statistics, facts and figures that you can use to make an informed judgement as to whether you, your children, your grandchildren and future generations will be better off with a NRST or a progressive income tax.
