Iran and Syria, at least, ought to take note. We're not going to stand for their habitual misbehavior anymore.

while emotional fear (of losing their power base) are strong, (Logical,non-nationalist) thinking is not..there's no though for the long-term growth of Islam...one thing to promise, the others to deliver.

Recipe for Arab Advancement
-------------------------------
Start with a well-preserved root stock of tribalism,
Coat well with Islamism (any popular brand will do)
Now add in liberal amounts of Pan-Arabism, Socialism, and fascism.
Add excessive petro-dollars (nominally to create a stable middle-class layer,
but in reality to enable the dark passions to be fully released.)
Stir well and serve seething hot ...

MMmmmmmmmm ... Good!

Just what are "the principles of the Baathist party"? Seems to me it's just a fancy name for totalitarianism.

We should move our bases in Saudi to Iraq. I wonder if the new Iraqi govt will invite us to do so, or will it be the Muslim same old, same old, as Colin caves?

If we settle for anything less than a Guantanamo-style base agreement Bush will be remembered as an idiot, which he assuredly is not.

This explains a lot!

Socialists in Congress August 31, 2001

Democratic Socialists of America's Progressive Caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives

Taken verbatim from the Internet web site of the Democratic Socialists of America

"The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is the largest socialist organization in the United States, and the principal U.S. affiliate of the Socialist International (also in Francais and Espanol). DSA's members are building progressive movements for social change while establishing an openly socialist presence in American communities and politics...

"We invite you to support the campaign by adding your name to the list of signers of the Pledge for Economic Justice. In conjunction with the Campaign DSA is working with the Congressional Progressive Caucus, a network of more than 50 progressive members of the US House of Representatives...

"The Progressive Caucus of the US House of Representatives is made up of 58 members of the House. The Caucus works to advance economic and social justice through sponsoring legislation that reflects its purpose. The Caucus also works with a coalition of organizations, called the Progressive Challenge, to bring new life to the progressive voice in US politics."

Descended in some ways from the philosophy of Ataturk

Ba'ath par:
Nationalist
Socialist (but open to western-styled commerce)
Western-leaning in the sense of education and technology
Open to modernization and commerce
Secular (a very important component - NOT muslim fundamentalist)
Open to minorities of Christians and Jews.

Turkey's attempts to undermine the Iraqi Kurds

I hope that the US and Turkey can cut a deal that as long as the Kurds don't attempt to build a "greater Kurdistan" and the Turks stay out of Iraq, there will be no "trouble." I never understood the romanticizing of the Kurds, although I am still happy that they are free from Saddam's tyranny.

Remember, TE Lawrence and Sir Richard Burton (the explorer, NOT the actor) helped to romanticize the "oppressed" Arabs under Ottoman rule. As a result, we ended up with Wahabbists on the throne in Riyadh when TE and the Brits were done with WWI.

I don't know the history of the area, but on the ground, I believe the Kurds earned Kurdistan. What the Iraqi Kurds do in Iraq, IMO, is as much Turkey's business as what Quebeckers do in Canada is the business of the US.

I think you are using a circular argument

def : nutcase =>> islamo-facists

def : islamo-facists =>> nutcase

Maybe the head will start eating the tail and poof they will both disappear.

I agree with your argument they don't think through their actions to get to the end. Even after they have had 2 demonstrations, they still seem incapable of figuring it all out.

Whether they invite us or not I think that Iraq just became our base of operations for the next several years.

When I say leave these people alone. I mean no trade, no immigration, no contact period except for lets say a humanitarian crisis where we go in and render assistance. The other thing that you need to remember about Islam is that it is Eastern in thought. Where I am going with this, is that, your typical Muslim does not look at the Muslim brotherhood as just those people in his community or his Mosque like we in the west do. He looks at the brotherhood as everyone who is here now worldwide, everyone who has come before worldwide and everyone who will come after. Keeping that in mind in virtually all of the Arab Countries and predominately Catholic countries places like Poland, Italy etc prior to the reformation the economic system was much different than it is now in those countries. You were not allowed to borrow money and repay interest or own stock. This is the root of the problem.
