I just read When Worlds Collide/After Worlds Collide a few months ago for the first time since I read then in 7th grade. Back then I was mostly interested in the After Worlds Collide part. But I found the first part a lot more interesting this time.

If I remember correctly (it's been a long time) they weren't very politically correct in selecting the passengers.

Don't be jerking my chain now. May 15th is my 70th birthday and I've survived 100 year floods and 7.7 earthquakes and I don't need no stinking rock ruining it at this stage...

Keep an eye on congress. When Maxine Waters drafts a bill to provide aid, comfort and rehabilitation to 'any additional aliens that may present themselves to our shores' then you can start assuming the final position.

If I remember correctly (it's been a long time) they weren't very politically correct in selecting the passengers.

It wasn't as bad as politically-oversensitive people now would characterize it. The American group selected people based on their abilities--mostly scientific (of course, if you get a large group of people who are extremely proficient in science you'll also get many great artists, musicians, and generally well-educated people; the same can't be said of most other fields of knowledge, especially education). Near launch time, after the first pass of the Bronson bodies, there was a woman, described as an idiot and an actress, who had made her way to the camp and was taken--along with the main character's "Jap" servant, who turned out to have been a spy for the Japanese faction and highly-educated professor of foreign languages. It was on Bronson Beta, though, after the Germans and an Asiatic group had taken over and were trying to freeze out the American group that the heroine was that "idiot" actress. She was the only one who had the brains to figure out that what the leader of the German/Asian group wanted was what she had to offer. She inveigled her way into their camp and made her way to the top. She finally learned enough about what was going on to gas a bunch of subordinates and then killed the head guy while he was, I believe, in the bath and saved the day. So much for the critics of these stories and their claims about the sexist or eugenicist bias in them.

You can get a single volume with both books in it from The University of Nebraska Press for $15.95. It preserves all the original spelling also.

I'm going to have to actually buy my own copy from that link I posted above. The description of the cataclysm of the first pass was still very, very impressive.

Indeed it was! :-) The copyright was clear back from 1932 also.

Hehehe...danged thing is just late, is all. Look towards Orion's belt, ooops, I mean "PatrickHenry's Belt" in what used to be known as the consellation of Orion. (PH had it renamed). Niburu has supposedly been sighted in the vicinity as a "fairly bright star". Heh.

You sure that Gryo-magnetic Pulse-a-tronic Rogue Planet Deflector™ - thingie really works??? Better order-up quick!

"What these fools don't realize is that the world has already ended! I know this for a fact." Yeah, I think the world ended about 10 years ago. I'm just trying to make the most of this bizzaro realty and trying not to take anything too seriously.

relax,you are inside the matrix
