The difference here is that alleged perpetrators of this will be punished by the governments who sent them there. In Iraq, under Saddam Hussein, it was the government who perpetrated those sorts of crimes...and more!

I trust that the accused will be tried, and if found guilty, punished to the fullest extent of the applicable laws. Had this photo shop employee worked in Husseini Iraq, she would have been the next star of the picture show.

I would assume that the police officer detained the soldier on the suspicion of a crime. Gone down to the station for a chat, no doubt. Detention until determination if a crime has been committed may be standard in Britain....whose laws I am not familiar with. Once the military has been contacted, I'm sure they have codes of cunduct that may apply in this case.

In any event, the soldier is in deep crap over this. Abuse of prisoners is a crime, no doubt. No matter who they may be.

The Sun is determined to do anything to undermine the Iraqi war.

Are you kidding? The Sun was more gung ho about the war than just about any other publication on Earth. Seriously, the Sun made most American papers look like war protestors (which they were). LOL! The Sun was practically a combatant. I think it was favorite place to go during the war.

They haven't undermined the war by printing the truth (assuming this is). This Soldier has undermined the military effort through his actions. That's what's happened. Put the blame where it belongs.

The soldier was turned over to the military for investigation:
'More to come'
By JOHN KAY

THE Army probe into the photos scandal has been stepped up amid fears that a “hornets’ nest” of horror could be unearthed.

Lt Col Jeremy Green, commanding officer of the Special Investigations Branch, last night took personal charge of the inquiry.

And a source close to the investigation said: “There is a genuine fear that this is not just a scandal involving one 18-year-old Fusilier.

“Our biggest worry is that the reputation of 1 Battalion, the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, will be besmirched.”

Fuslier Gary Bartlam, 18, is being held in custody at an Army base where he is being grilled by senior Special Investigation Branch officers. He is unlikely to be released until the probe is completed.

One source said that some of the photos appeared to show simulated sex acts but “even if that is so, it would not excuse the behaviour.”

A Royal Military Police source said: “We are braced for more scandals to come out — it could become a real hornets’ nest with more horrific revelations.

“But we have a duty to investigate thoroughly and no stone will be left unturned.

“Whatever the circumstances, there is no excuse for British soldiers to maltreat PoWs. Our first job is to establish how many of the regiment may be involved.

“That includes finding out if NCOs and platoon commander knew of these activities.”

Lt Col Green immediately widened the probe to cover the entire regiment.

A lieutenant who was Bartlam’s platoon commander, plus a sergeant and three corporals, will be quizzed and statements taken from others in Bartlam’s platoon.

A senior Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said: “If there is any truth in these allegations the MoD is appalled and would stress we take our responsibilities to PoWs extremely seriously.”

"This is just about sex. It does not have any effect on how the soldiers do their job. They should get back to their important work for the British people. We should move on. "

But if the Iraqis did this to our POWs would you say the same thing?

Where have you heard this before? I was being sarcastic and "quoting" Bill Clinton re: Monica

Lt Col Tim Collins, former CO of the 1st Royal Irish Regiment, is being investigated
over accusations he mistreated Iraqi civilians and PoWs.

And has been cleared...as noted on threads here at freerepublic within the past week.

The Bartlam and Collins inquiries are not connected.

Well, at least The Sun gets credit for including the sort of notice a lot of
other rags would leave out (or not even think to include).
Even better, reporters for The Sun should hang out at free republic in order to keep
up with the news cycle...in the 21st Century.

Wrong answer. Never ever condone this type of behavior amongst your juniors. Those who lack the wherewithal and even decency to give a damn about their fellow man, will be the exact same losers who frag their own forces because of some emotional tirade.

Excellent point.

I am not happy with the bitch that blew the whistle either .

Don't blame the messenger. She's a patriotic lass and these guys aren't true Brits any more than they're authentic human beings. The best thing we can do is show the world that we won't tolerate this kind of behavior. Five to ten years sitting all day on a little stool in a gray cell should give the 'soldiers' a better perspective on what it means to be civilized.
