The cruelty of sports is so tightly tied to the beauty. Every name on the Stanley Cup is matched by a person who got within 4 wins of hoisting it only to congradulate the winner, some came within one win, some within one goal. You can't have winners without losers, and it's often the most miniscule picayune thing that seperates them. In golf they play 72 holes to lose by one stroke, in MLB they play 162 games to miss the playoffs by one game. The fact that after all that walking, all that thinking, all that analyzing, all that club swinging, a player can lose because he mis-wrote something on a slip of paper in his pocket and didn't catch it before signing it... is what sports is all about.
