He was a Polish officer captured by the red army in 1939. He was accused of being a spy and sent to a siberian gulag.
He and some companions (including an american) escaped. They didn't all make it but they walked all the way to India. It is an inspiring tale of fortitude and the quest for freedom. But I digress.
Rawicz describes (in about 1 page) an encounter in the himalayas with something very like a sasquatch. He was a trained observer, a practical man and not given to flights of fancy.
More to the point, he had no concievable reason to make it up. His long escape from red tyranny is bizarre enough without adding anything.
