Just lost my $80K/year engineering position.

Must be tough to lose such a good job.
At least you were smart enough to stay debt free and put away plenty of savings.
Too many people I know make good money but save nothing, are in debt, and living hand to mouth.

In today's world people need to prepare for things like this.

You're kidding right? How would that help, seeing that the Chairman of the Board, the board, and all the senior executive staff are all best buddies and all go sailing on the same boats and drink from the same bottle of wine at backyard barbecues?

Today, I was telling my husband about your post and the advice to go to the board. We got a good laugh over the advice. My husband said there is no way they would NOT have you escorted out of the building. There is a huge disconnect from reality going on here.

We, then got a bigger laugh about the new Compliance & Ethics Hotline required by Sarbanes Oxley.

You tell me which is smarter: Layoff 10 $80K/year engineers who produce technical innovation or Layoff one 800K/year senior VP who produces powerpoint slides and failed management schemes.

Pssshaaaw ! Yeah, but I'll betcha not one of those engineers has pistol grip ears and a removable denture like the VP does. I'd even betcha not one of those engineers even has a single pair of square toed shoes or talks with an effeminate lisp like the executive, either. < /sarcasm >

My sincere sympathy. Also the ripple effect of 10 engineers @80k on the local economy and the Fed and State revenues is significant. No doubt we are going thru changes and at your level of expertise working at Sams or Walmart is not a real job. There are some on this Forum that love cheap deals just like shortsighted management.

A buddy of mine works for a large tech company, they sent all of their IT support and software people to India via IBM. They have 50 people left in the company in that IT division. 8 of them are VPs.

Remember the golden rule of corporate management: "a prince never shoots another prince".

What we are going thru is not a hang over, but more like a heroin user having problems readjusting from the media and stock market hype of the later 90’s. All this stuff is largely Clinton era karma coming back in our faces.The Clinton years were about mergers then acquisitions and we were looking the other way as long as our 401ks were in good shape. Manufacturing went off shore, finances and now intellectual capital made possible by the Global Network, broadband, etc. Virtually all IT companies making hardware and software have international presence/ facilities. Having said this I know the solution is not with the Democrats but letting local leaders know.

what is happening now is not about jobs at pets.com. those were all flushed out with the bubble in late 2000 into 2001. what we are talking about are stable jobs at large companies, that are not going away because "business is down", they are simply moving those jobs to offshore workers. Conscious decisions have been made in government to facilitate offshoring practices, along with these easy visa programs for workers here in the USA. All in the name of "free trade" and this insane idea that american capitalism means that businesses are entitled to have the government facilitate the availability of the lowest costs labor possible to them, anywhere on the globe, no matter what.
