Bush is absolutely right on this point, which is why he needs to get over his hang-ups about France, the Security Council, and the diplomatic disasters of last November, and to get serious about working out a common solution to the much bigger disaster that looms in Iraq.I am pretty sure...the OLD Iraq was the "common solution."
To: Pikamax
The ONLY improvements President Bush could have made to that speach would have been to:
1. Inform that august body that they have overstayed their welcome in New York City....of all places!
2. That the United States is withdrawing from membership i in the U.N...
3. That the United States was freezing all payments to the U.N. graft distribution system.
4. Then add France and Germany to the axis of evil....
5. Inform those members that were not active members of the coalition of the willing - that they had 5 days to get their asses out of America.
Perhaps then --- the world would take notice that we're sick and damned tired of being the bleeding bodies and frazzeled pocket book to defend the world against lunatics and would in the future - look to our own defenses...
By ANY means necessary...

Right on.
Just a few points to ponder: Why would we accept Kofi Annan as a quasi dictator, ruling the free people of the United States? We elect our officials in this country, we don't allow 3rd world citizens to rule us. My god, it is even unconstitutional :)
If we gave the UN the mandate, we would continue having our soldiers in Iraq doing the dirty work. The UN would only be in charge and give orders. Our soldiers wouldn't even be allowed to defend themselves if attacked. The Frogs would only give lip service and ridicule us from the sidelines. They would never send troops anyway.
Go to hell UN. After the NATO led war in Kosovo and Serbia, which the UN was not aked about their opinion, The UN stepped in. Of course, it has been 8 years now in Kosovo and no end in sight. chIRAQ wants us to turn over the government to the Iraqi people within months when he couldn't get the UN to establish one in 8 years?

President Bush gave the U.N. more deference than it deserves just by showing up and acknowledging its existence-I would have sent an intern. Since the partition of Israel, which I'm sure it deeply regrets, the U.N. has done nothing competently or of note, except to spend money and be a fraternity for international bullies. It's time to admit that the U.N. is a failure.

Everything the author said was "bad about the speech, all sounded good to me. How twisted the left has become.

The French want another dictator in Iraq that they can cut deals with as they did with Hussein. President Bush did well to stick to his conditions for the transfer of power in Iraq.

"...Bush's message can be summarized as follows: The U.S.-led occupation authority is doing good work in Iraq; you should come help us; if you don't, you're on the side of the terrorists."I'm astounded Kaplan got that much right.

Kaplan is like a lot of people who have never been west of the Hudson, except on a plane trip to the Left Coast. He has an idealized view of the UN, which is really a corrupt institution.

This bozo heard a different speech than I did. Absolutely. I heard Stephanopoulus comment right after the speech, and --gasp--he liked it, said that Bush had in fact offered a concilieatory speech in the fine points. Just being there was conciliatory in fact.
I was expecially taken with the recitation of the billions the US pays the UN for various humanitarian causes, the organization's proper interests. And Bush also reminded the Euroweenies of the billions we spent on the Marshall Plan. In other words, they owe us. Bigtime. Will they pay up by participating in Iraq now that we've done the heavy lifting? If not, the implicit threat is that we might not fund their work any more. Bush didn't say that specifically, but certainly it was implied.

This article is an excellent example of what is wrong with the left in this country. At their core, they are intellectually dishonest. That they believe the liberation of Iraq is some kind of colossal failure speaks volumes to their inability to admit when they are wrong. It's not even an unwillingness to make this concession, it is I believe something they are unable to do. It is this inability coupled with their inability to formulate new and original ideas that will be their ultimate downfall. I look forward to watching this unfold.

Bush's message can be summarized as follows: The U.S.-led occupation authority is doing good work in Iraq; you should come help us; if you don't, you're on the side of the terrorists. Sounds good to me.
They should be happy we are letting them have a chance to help.

America to Fred - drop dead.
An impertinent speach would have been, "I give you all 48 hours to pack your bags and get your worthless a$$es out of our country."

Another girly-man metrosexual gets his panties in a wad. Tsk tsk tsk. Bush didn't go far enough, IMHO.
