Lubricant coats and protects the polished disc surface that spins thousands of times per minute as data are magnetically recorded, retrieved and erased on the drive by a head that flies back and forth dozens of times per second. But today's standard lubricant, called perfluoropolyethers, is reaching its limits as disc drives spin faster and hold more data. When I came home from work this afternoon a small package was waiting for me... Apple's newest operating system: Macintosh OS-X Panther. The system comes on three disks plus another disk of Developer Tools. The installation actually only uses two of the CDs and in fact the second only carries the "i" applicatin software and the extra language files. Updating my OSX .2.8 installation on my 1.6Mhz G5 took only 22 minutes... plus another 15 or so for the software and extra languages. At a special event held today at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the long-awaited iTunes software for Windows. The service provides not only digital music playback features for Windows users, but also offers them access to the iTunes Music Store.
