In the XVI Century, the common man was illiterate.

The Protestant Reformation proved a seminal event in precipitating the change from illiteracy to literacy. It is ironic that the Bible - the ability to read which provided the impetus for common literacy - has become forbidden in our public learning institutions today. Talk about biting the hand that feeds...

"Where Did Halloween Come From?"

I believe it was a joint effort between Hershey's, Nestles' and M&M Mars.

Looks like another "Aww! Not this s**t again!" thread.

Open letter to the holy rollers on FR and in America:
I don't bother you when you're doing your little "alternative" thing at the local church, so please don't interfere with my fun and don't try to feed this ridiculous cornpone crap to my very young siblings or their little friends (who happen to think dressing up as little Ghosts or the 'Scream' killer to go trick-or-treating on Halloween is absolutely great).

That nasty business aside, I wish you all a Happy Halloween!

Christianity adapted a lot of things from the pagan world during the early centuries. Christmas (Christ's Mass) replaced several pagan mid-winter celebrations. Even wedding rings were used by the pagans. I don't mind kids trick-or-treating. I get annoyed when grown men and women dress up in goofy costumes and put up garish decorations.

This reminds me of the King of the Hill episode where Hank has to save Halloween from the holy roller lady at the "Hallalujah House". That was one of my favorites.

LOL! That's one of my favorite King of the Hill's.
My fave part was when Bill tries to trick-or-treat as a ghost, but steps on the sheet and rips it over his shoulder...so Bill starts yelling "TOGA!" and goes as a Greek.

I don't think we need that kind of rhetoric here.

I really don't think people mocking people's religous beliefs is something that is all that funny. Maybe you do, but I don't.

So if the Bible is the only way you can learn what you need to know to be saved, does that mean that anyone who can't read will end up in Hell?

No. I know you don't have to read the Bible to go to Heaven. I'm just wondering what you believe. Somebody had to decide what was to be included in the Bible. Jesus didn't just give the Apostles a truckload of Gideons New Testaments to pass out. He established a Church to teach all mankind.

I'm not mocking your religion at all, because I am also a Christian. Jesus is my savior, and I believe in His power and boundless love for his creation (mankind). I'm just sick to death of a certain type of radical, intolerate fundamentalists who think it's a Christian idea to harass those with opposing views. The Holy Rollers I speak of use ridiculous rhetoric and fears of druids, witches etc., to guilt little children out of dressing up for a fun, silly night every Oct. 31. The Holy Rollers think anybody who acknowledges and appreciates the God-given balance of life (the light and the dark each have their place of interest in our lives) is a devil in sheep's clothing.

Well, I don't. I love and worship God as much as you do, and I will not be told I'm going to hell by sheltered frumps because I watch horror movies and read Rue Morgue magazine. God is not opposed to fun, entertainment, OR Halloween, and I'm making a stan

I enjoyed the Martin Luther tie-in to Halloween.

Oops, that should be "making a STAND", not "...stan".

Whatever; Happy Halloween.
(going offline to enjoy the festivities soon, but if you're quick with your reply, I might just get to it tonight).

Perhaps I made a mistake. Is this not posted in the "Religion" forum? If not, my apologies...

It's a beautiful thing, isn't it? Since you mentioned Martin Luther, I do wish you a happy Reformation Day!
