My wife carries her Bible in her purse... on her Palm Pilot.
Not as noticable as other people’s Bibles, especially if the guy is looking for large black leather 1611 King James Bibles the size of a coffee table.
On the worldly scale to which the author referred?
I certainly hope not!
On another thread you were lamenting the social gospel liberalism of Jimmy Carter's and Bill Clinton's new "Baptist" convention...The Willow Creek methodology (entertainments, inspiration, "non-judgemental", mysticism, unbiblical doctrines, seeker-sensitive non-gospel and etc.) is running on a parallel track next to the Carter/Clinton convention and it will eventually arrive at the same destination.
And I am not defending Hybels.
He is a skunk in wolve’s clothing.
He’s referring to the mindless repetition of shallow lyrics.
Over and over and over and over.
The Church of What’s Happening Now.
YOU ARE GOOD
by Israel Houghton
Lord You are good and Your mercy endureth forever
Lord You are good and Your mercy endureth forever
People from every nation and tongue
From generation to generation
[CHORUS]
We worship You
Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
We worship You for who You are
We worship You
Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
We worship You for who You are
And You are Good [REPEAT FROM THE TOP]
Yes You are, Yes You are, Yes You are!
So good, so good
Yes You are, Yes You are, Yes You are!
You are good all the time
and all the time, You are good.
(Repeats)
Lord You are good and Your mercy endureth forever
Lord You are good and Your mercy endureth forever
People from every nation and tongue
From generation to generation
[CHORUS]
We worship You
Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
We worship You for who You are
We worship You
Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
We worship You for who You are
for who You are
for who You are
And You are Good
profound.
Reminds me of the classic
Jesus we loooove you
Jesus we loooove you
Jesus we loooove you
Yes we do
Jesus we loooove you
Jesus we loooove you
Jesus we loooove you
Yes we do
If you prefer the King James Bible and the same 4 stanzas of the same 400 year old hymnal every Sunday for the rest of your life, that is your perogative.
Hybel’s so-called repentance will only lead further into mysticism (because the new generation is clamoring for all-things more spiritual (got to give them what they want so that they will come). Unlike the unchurched Boomers and Gen X, these younger ones are into “spirituality”, not entertainment
Here is another shallow repetitious song (Why do they have to sing the same thing over and over?):
____________________________________________________
Psalm 136
1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
2 Give thanks to the God of gods.
His love endures forever.
3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords:
His love endures forever.
4 to him who alone does great wonders,
His love endures forever.
5 who by his understanding made the heavens,
His love endures forever.
6 who spread out the earth upon the waters,
His love endures forever.
7 who made the great lights
His love endures forever.
8 the sun to govern the day,
His love endures forever.
9 the moon and stars to govern the night;
His love endures forever.
10 to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt
His love endures forever.
11 and brought Israel out from among them
His love endures forever.
12 with a mighty hand and outstretched arm;
His love endures forever.
13 to him who divided the Red Sea [a] asunder
His love endures forever.
14 and brought Israel through the midst of it,
His love endures forever.
15 but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea;
His love endures forever.
16 to him who led his people through the desert,
His love endures forever.
17 who struck down great kings,
His love endures forever.
18 and killed mighty kings
His love endures forever.
19 Sihon king of the Amorites
His love endures forever.
20 and Og king of Bashan
His love endures forever.
21 and gave their land as an inheritance,
His love endures forever.
22 an inheritance to his servant Israel;
His love endures forever.
23 to the One who remembered us in our low estate
His love endures forever.
24 and freed us from our enemies,
His love endures forever.
25 and who gives food to every creature.
His love endures forever.
26 Give thanks to the God of heaven.
His love endures forever.
How easy it is to dismiss points by saying things that bear no resemblance to reality. What an empty, childish argument.
You want to make things up? Go ahead, it doesn’t change anything. You want shallow so called worship?? Go ahead.
Willow Creek is all about Self. Not about true worship.
You have a Creator that is so holy that wise men dare not even speak His name,it’s so holy. So holy He can not be looked upon, and you think mindless repetition of empty little phrases is worship?
You think that people that know Him so little that they don’t even know that He is worth their BEST, not their casual, cool I-stopped-in-here-on-my-way-to-somewhere-really-fun clothes
It’s not whether you wear a suit, of course it’s not, it’s one’s attitude toward the holy Creator of the universe and what priority you place Him on compared to Self.
Of course this guy did not write a perfect article. But he has valid points.
I am curious as to what you mean.
Well, I guess the author is just going to have to find a different church to attend, huh?
The entertainment that is passed off as “church” in the world today in no way resembles the gathering of the saints in the 1st century.
Okay you guys win that one. I was only going by the article. I do find fault in some of the materials coming from Willow Creek, but I’ll admit that the song lyrics were misrepresented in the article.
One small technicality.
One was inspired by God. The other wasn’t.
The author should have picked one topic and stuck with it. He write poorly of two topics instead of well about one.
Correct. You have to add the dresses, KJV Bible and the hymnals with organ music.
BTW, paying "Sister Helen" twenty fiver dollars per week to play a bad rendition of Old Rugged Cross on the 90 year old organ isn't necessarily giving God the "BEST" (as you call it).
Well, at my church we have a band - every song is to glorify God not to entertain.
We have prayer during the music which is a form of worship.
We have music during the offering which is a form of worship - we bring the offering to the front - as in old bring the tithe and offering (not collect).
We have people who walk and shout out to God during music and prayer and read Scripture as led during music.
We have people who yell Amen when the pastor says something particularly fantastic and God inspired.
We are not a quite church.
(At least no one strips their clothes and run around like King David did while worshiping the Lord ;-)
Praying, singing, partaking of the Lord’s supper, offering, and preaching the Word are all forms of worship that are authorized in Scripture. Also, I never said anything about having to be quiet.
The entertainment in my traditional church upbringing was always a solo performance by some person or quartet to the congregation, which was expected to sit quietly.
In my contemporary church today, we have no performance based singing. You are expected to participate in all songs.
The musicians are not there to entertain a bunch of people simply warming the pews.
Confiscate his Bible? I realize that this is hyperbole, but never in my lifetime did I ever think I would hear a Christian say this.
