In Matthew 16 Jesus is talking to all of the Apostles. They were all asked the question of who they thought He was. Though Peter was the one who answered for the group Jesus was talking to them all. When Peter said that they believed He was Christ the Son of the Living God Jesus replied and said that it was not flesh and blood that had revealed that to Peter but that it was my Father which is in heaven. He then says to Peter and thou art Peter, acknowledging that He knew who Peter was just as Peter knew who Jesus was. Then Jesus, referring back to my Father which is in heaven, says, upon this rock I will build my church.
In other places in scripture Jesus is referred to as the corner stone, but the rock that the church is build on is the Father.
If you want reference to God as the Rock here are some verses.
Deut. 32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
2 Sam. 22:2 And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; 3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.
Psalm 18:31, "And who is a rock, except our God."
Isaiah 44:8, "Is there any God besides Me, or is there any other Rock? I know of none."
Rom. 9:33, "Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, and he who believes in Him will not be disappointed."
1 Cor. 3:11, "For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ,"
1 Cor. 10:4, "and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock (petras) which followed them; and the rock (petra) was Christ."
1 Pet. 2:8, speaking of Jesus says that he is "A stone of stumbling and a rock (petra) of offense"; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed."
How many Jewish men named "Simon, son of Jonah" were there in first century Judea? The name was hardly unique.
Might want to check out Ephesians 2:20.
No, the name "Peter" is unknown prior to that time, and comes from the Gk meaning "rock".
Then Jesus, referring back to my Father which is in heaven, says, upon this rock I will build my church.
That's reading something into the text that just isn't there.
Might want to check out 1 Cor. 3:11. And compare Scripture with Scripture to get the meaning.
Ephesians 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
Yep, a foundation built upon a Rock which is God. You wouldnt want to build a foundation on sand would you? Everyone knows that when you begin a foundation you dig down untill you hit bedrock. Its not the foundation that the whole thing is built on, its the bedrock.
Many times in scripture we are told who the Rock is and God didnt change that.
1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3 regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, 4 and who through the Spirit[a] of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God[b] by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
Must have been lying then. But the Catholics included it anyway when 'they wrote the Bible'.
Fascinating. So how many bone boxes with the name “Simon Bar Jona” have they found? Are they just stacked up, because the name was so common in the first century Judea? “Simon Bar Jona”. Evidently the equivalent of “John Doe”.
1 Cor. 3:11, "For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ,"
1 Cor. 10:4, "and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock (petras) which followed them; and the rock (petra) was Christ."
While Pope Pius XII in 1953 announced that the true remains of St Peter had been found in Rome, many scholars have remained skeptical about the significance of the discoveries.
So all those Old Testament passages that proclaim God to be the ONLY Rock were talking about something other then a Rock (petra)? How tortured must you make scripture to comport to Catholic doctrine?
Not that they would break the confessional rules, but you wonder how hysterical it would be as a book... detailing little stories about children in Confession. I personally think it would bring a smile to any Catholics face and to see just how innocent the little ones can be.
“Bless me Father, for I have sinned. It has been two weeks since my last confession”. Father says, “What are your sins, my child”. Child: “I told my Mom that her meatloaf tasted like dog food and I think I hurt her feelings”.
“That’s no sin, my child, your mother served it at the rectory last week and we all agree with you!”
LOL!!! I’d respond more but I have to clean up all the iced tea that I just sprayed everywhere!!
The teacher needs to be fired in my opinion.
Except when it stands in opposition to an extraordinary claim ... which you have certainly made.
His name was SIMON and Jesus changed it to PETRA!!
And thats pertinent to the conversation because? Your comment of you are the ROCK on whom I will build My Church is blatantly false. Jesus did NOT say that.
My husband’s cousin a Nun sure was. She was one of the most “on fire Christians” I have ever known.
