One advantage that the Catholic West had over the Orthodox East was a strong unity of purpose guided in the person of the Pope, thus securing a stronger sense of organisation against the Islamic enemy.

When Constantinople was still Christian in the 10th century, the Byzantine emperor Nicephorus Phocas asked the Patriarch of Constantinople to accord the honor of martyrdom to Chrisitans who died fighting the Muslims, but the patriarch refused.

The popes were more warlike than the patriarchs.

In the meantime, Jan Sobieski III of Poland, ...

Here's a mouthful, from Wikipedia

Scutum was named in 1684 by Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius[1] (Jan Heweliusz), who originally named it Scutum Sobiescianum (Shield of Sobieski) to commemorate the victory of the Christian forces led by Polish King John III Sobieski (Jan III Sobieski) in the Battle of Vienna in 1683. Later, the name was shortened to Scutum.

Perhaps it's not wise to emphasize this, lest it come to the attention of certain parties.

My adult son and I visited the Kahlenberg a few years ago. Nice church at the top near where the Winged Hussars were sited before they were loosed on the muslims invaders.

Great view of the city from there, too. According to Wikipedia, the place was previously known as Sow Mountain or Swine Mountain. How ironic and appropriate is that?

Not only this, but by destroying the Judeo-Christian foundations of the West, we have also opened the door to moral decline, as is evidenced by the promotion of sodomy, abortions, all manner of sexual deviancy, destruction of marriage and the family unit, and so on.

Seems like today's Pope is working to keep that door open.

I’ll have a croissant and bagel tomorrow in tribute to those who saved western civilization 9/11-12/1683.

Someone did.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1899285/

Not the greatest movie.

I do take issue with #2. The biggest ally of the Turks were the Catholic kings of France, who operated on the principle that the enemy of their enemy (The Holy Roman Empire) was their friend and had secret alliances with the Turks. They refused to send troops to fight them and tried to take advantage of the situation to grab territory.

Satan is waging a two prong attack on Christendom on one side by Islam and on the other side by secular humanism.

Nice summary.

Wife and I were planning a Vienna trip, but cancelled as it now appears that the next invasion of Islam has begun, and I could care less in being there.

Out of gratitude for the defeat initiated by Sobieski against the Ottomans, both Viennese and Polish Jewish bakers created what we know today as the croissant and the bagel. The former was to represent the defeat of the Ottomans (the crescent) and was popularised a lot later by the French through Marie Antoinette only to be called “croissants” and the latter was to represent the stirrups on the horse of Sobieski.

Sweet! I love croissants and bagels.
