Well said! I don't think I will ever understand why some want to usurp the authority intrinsic in the word of God - BECAUSE it is the word of God (holy men of God spoke as they were moved/carried along by the Holy Spirit). I mean I know they DO it, but I don't understand WHY they have to do it. If Scripture is only as authoritative as a church deems it to be, then from where does the church base it's authority?

Read the prophet Hosea and the Gospel of Matthew for the passages where God calls Israel, His Son, with his mother (Miriam/Mary) out of Egypt ...

Well, it’s REALLY cynical of me to say this...

But when the question of ‘why’ is asked, the answer tends to be ‘follow the money.’ And if it’s not money, ‘follow the pride.’

The RCC stands to lose a LOT of money, prestige, and power if ever the ‘one true church’ meme loses its power among the congregants. And if the ‘one true church’ suddenly is out and out wrong, and has been wrong for centuries... well...

Did you know that passage from Isaiah was interpreted in the New Testament ? The reference is not Israel. It is Jerusalem from above. Israel is masculine and Jerusalem is feminine. Kingdom (מַמְלָכָה) is also feminine, hence the references to the Kingdom of Israel and Kingdom of Judah with feminine language as wife, sister, or harlot (Hosea, Jeremiah)

Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.

...

But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
