What kind of sick mind presumes their personal interpretations are superior to thousands of years of study and divine revelation?

Do you assign hypocrisy to your personal inability to live up to Biblical standards?

What's interesting is that this commentary revolves around the various theories that assume that these lifespans were *too long*.

And also of particular note: the list of examples begins with Adam and ends with David.

Two and two together:

In the Jewish tradition, Adam was supposed to live to 1000 years, but he was shown a future when one particular soul was doomed to die, to be miscarried. In that soul was the future Redeemer of mankind. That is to say, the one who was going to rectify Adam's sin.

Adam asked God if it were possible to give this soul a gift. "Sure, you betcha." So Adam gave this soul 70 years from his own life, so that it could live.

This is the story of why Adam lived to be 930 instead of 1000, and why David lived to be 70 and able to produce the Messianic line.

It also involves the concept of providing the original offender the ability to rectify his own sin, because otherwise it's not really a proper restoration if someone else paid the bill for him so to speak.

By freely giving David 70 years of his own life, Adam was able to repair his own damage.

Adam lived for 930 years. Our Sages explained that he really should have lived for a complete millennium, but he willingly gave up 70 years of his life to someone who would use them to reverse the death sentence that Adam had introduced to mankind. Adam prophetically saw that a potential descendent of his to be born thousands of years later had not been allocated years and he sacrificed 70 of his own so that person would live.

The recipient of those years was none other than King David, the scion of the messianic line which will usher in the end of time. Our tradition teaches that the Moshiach will help bring the world to its perfection and toward revival of the dead, reversing Adam's colossal mistake. Adam knew this, and realized that it was critical for him to ensure that King David would live and accomplish his task in the world. Adam had brought death to the world, and to correct that, he ensured that there would be someone to bring us back to eternal life.

On that train of thought,

How was it, that Eber (from whom Hebrew is derived) could live all the way to age 464? A better question is, "What happened to the other 536 [תקל"ו] years?"

(There's also a visual pun in 464, because the name David is spelled dalet-vav-dalet [דוד], the letters that have the values 4-6-4.)

If Arch Pope agrees with Scripture, I consider it a good thing.

He waffles on defending it somewhat, undermining the authority of Scripture.

... but for an Arch Pope column, it’s much better than usual.

I don’t know anyone who lived to 120 years.

Does that mean God lied about them?

Because if I take your passage quote 100% literally, then every man should live to 120 years.

You can argue that that’s not what is meant here, but then you are interpreting it, just like everyone else interprets the Bible, or selected passages thereof.

Face it, there are parts of the Bible that are just not meant to be taken word-for-word literally, but requires some distinction and interpretation.

Maybe they had an undocumented calendar change, as in the Julian-to-Gregorian move, except that it was a really big one.

I remember an intro to Western Religion class. Can't remember the names, but in the Torah, one guy prostitutes/marries off his centi-aged wife to some ruler for passage, then turns around and calls the ruler a bigamist, and oh, by the way, my God is better than your "god", so give me my wife back.

No wonder taqiyya came about...

The Sumerian King List records the lengths of reigns of the kings of Sumer. The initial section deals with kings before the Flood and is significantly different from the rest.

It is suggested that the Sumerian scribe that composed the original antediluvian list had available a document (possibly a clay tablet) containing numerical information on the ages of eight of the patriarchs similar to that of the Genesis record and that he mistakenly interpreted it as being written in the sexagesimal system.

That the two documents are numerically related is strong evidence for the historicity of the book of Genesis.

I don’t buy the “watery cover” theory, but you are onto something with radiation. There was a supernova (Vela supernova) in our vicinity some 40,000 years ago. If you don’t hold strictly to the Ussher’s timescale (I don’t), it could be that the Lord allowed that nearby supernova precisely to limit mankind’s years, and to limit the ramifications of sin. Rom 8:28.

I have always assumed that many plants that may have played a part in longevity became extinct as a result of the flood. Or that there was a change in the atmospheric canopy that caused 40 days of constant rain and also resulted in increased exposure to radiation that shortened lifespan to a blip of what it had been.

I just don’t see the extreme ages of pre-flood times being that big of a deal.

Money line:

“Prior to the flood, lifespans remained in the vicinity of 900 years, but right afterward they dropped by about a third (Shem only lived to 600), and then the numbers plummeted even further.”

The environment prior to the flood enabled longer life. The environment after the flood is less amenable to long life.

...." I won’t contend with man forever, for he is mortal, his days will be 120 yrs.".....

What God was telling us there is since Gen 6:1 Fallen Angels had corrupted the image of God on the earth and God was finished messing around. The mating of women with angels was an attempt to corrupt the image God had made in Adam and Eve. He declared there was 120 years left before the Flood would destroy them.

Noah was spoken of right after this declaration in Gen 6:9. Noah was perfect in his generations, meaning his seed wasn't corrupted yet. Later we find that ALL flesh was corrupted except for Noah. The Ark had to be finished before 120 years expired. Noah's children married women from nearby and were most assuredly contaminated. After the Flood, Ham's line was cursed by way of Canaan. Canaan settled Canaan Land and produced generations of giants called Nephilim. Nimrod was the first Nephilim after the Flood.(LXX)

YES, people lived the amount of years stated in Scripture. God made great effort to assure us that Creation took 6-24 hour days, as "the evening and morning were the first day, second day, and so on. The Hebrew calendar is based on 30 day months and 360 day years. God restated the 6 day Creation in Exodus in the Ten Commandments. He stated the Creation was made in 6 days and He rested on the 7th day so keep the Sabbath holy.

The earth was very different before the Flood than after.

Now look at what we have done to scripture today. We don't believe the earth is 5779 years old, as the Jews do. Thinking ourselves wise, we have added billions of years and became fools. It's possible that Jews lost track of the years while in captivity, but it won't matter more than a few dozen years at most. What we are doing is introducing unbelief by constantly questioning Scripture. This is important later when Peter states "a day is a thousand years and a thousand years as a day". He is telling us Jesus will return in the 6000th year to rule and reign for 1000 years. By our disbelief, we are asking to be left behind when Jesus comes to get His Bride. Scripture says we must be watching! Why would Jesus tell us we will be married and not tell us when? The day that no one knows the day or the our is known by the Jews as the Feast of Trumpets or Rosh Hashanah. Paul told Jews that they were children of the Light, so they would know things others don't.

1Th 5:1 But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you.

1Th 5:2 For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.

1Th 5:3 For when they say, "Peace and safety!" then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.

1Th 5:4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief.

For 30 days before Trumpets, Jews repent and pray during the month of Elul to be ready. The Jews that are still waiting for Jesus will be left behind so they pray for a good judgement also from Trumpets to Atonement for a total of 40 days. We are told in no uncertain terms that we will all be changed at the "Last Trump". That only happens at the Feast of Trumpets. So we know the day, we just don't know which Feast of Trumpets it will be. But if you believe what God has told us, then it will be somewhere around the 6000th year! Every year around Rosh Hashanah, we should be watching and be ready to go( oil in our lamps) to the Wedding Feast in Heaven with Jesus while the ones NOT WATCHING will be left behind to entertain the Beast with their beheading. ( their portion will be with the unbelievers!) Your flesh can die in the baptismal water, or physically die by the hand of the Beast, but if you belong to Jesus you must die to the flesh.

If you have trouble believing 950 year old people existed, how will you justify a talking bush, a talking donkey, the sun standing still in the sky, and eventually a baby born of a virgin and Him rising from the grave and walking among the people? If you can't believe a Flood killed EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING ON THE PLANET, then you will miss the purpose of the Flood. If you can't believe Israel passed through deep waters in the Red Sea, then you will have to believe God drowned the whole Egyptian army in 3 inches of water in a reed sea. Do NOT say that we don't serve a supernatural God! If you don't believe He created the universe in 6 days, do you believe He can heal your sicknesses? Can He really raise you from the dead if He can't deliver Israel from Egypt?

The attack on Genesis by "evolution" was just the beginning of Satan's attack on faith in God. If he could get you to doubt Genesis, you are unable to read the rest of Scripture. If God could lie about making man from dirt and breathing into him to make him a living soul, then why even pretend to believe any of it? There are reasons God gave us the genealogies of His people and their ages. People in Scripture are NOT random people, but they tell a story God wants told. Following this story of history literally means life and death to believers and unbelievers.

I take every word in the OT and NT as gospel truth even to the punctuation to understand what God is telling His people. To inject our opinion of what is said is to commit the original sin done by Adam and Eve in the Garden making ourselves gods. If you have trouble with the story God told, then maybe you should try another story, like from Allah, or Buddha. For a Christian, the Bible must be believed. There is no negotiation. Just because there is a passage that you don't understand doesn't make it untrue. I've found in my walk, that eventually the Holy Spirit will reveal it to you. I kept waiting for Jesus to tell His disciples that early people were so dumb we had to tell them they were made of dirt because they couldn't handle being told they came from monkeys. because He didn't, does that make Him a liar and unable to save us with a perfect sacrifice? In fact Jesus quoted verses from the OT all through His ministry. He believed it, why not us?

I don't have a problem with David living to the age of 70. I know lots of people who are older than 70 and still alive. President Trump is 72 (not someone I have ever met in person).

Some years ago there was a woman in France who reportedly was over 120 when she died. Supposedly it was well verified as to her date of birth.

“The Old Testament was never meant to be taken literally.”

Oh, cool. I was worried about taking the 10 commandments literally, but since they are just some old fairy tale, I guess I can sleep with my neighbor’s wife!

“Noah did not take two of every one of the hundreds of millions of animal species and have them live on a small boat.”

Well I’m pretty sure he avoided things like fish, water snakes, sea monsters or anything else happy and content with water. So what did he take? Who really knows the whole list except God.

The Old Testament is meant to be a moral guide and not a book in which every single word is literally true.

We should accept the general concepts of moral guidance and not pretend that every part of it actually happened.

Then why did Jesus and the apostles speak as if those stories actually happened? Were they just gullible suckers or were they liars?
