Not just Paul, but all the way back in Genesis.

Genesis 15:6 “And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.”

Sounds to me like faith alone, considering that Abraham... believed the Lord, and it was counted to him as righteousness.

Unless you think that the time-traveling super-villain Martin Luther not only went back in time to deceive St. Augustine, but also went back in time to deceive Abraham and Moses.

BTW-Saying Abraham sacrificing Isaac upon an altar is a good work is misreading what James is saying. That would be akin to saying plunging a knive into the chest of Isaac would have pleased God. Abraham was justified not by his "good works" to plunge a knive into his son. Abraham "good work" was his obedience and faithfulness to God's word fulling understanding that even if Abraham obeyed God in doing what He instructed, God would raise Isaac up from the dead.

Hebrews 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son; 18 it was he to whom it was said, “In Isaac your descendants shall be called.” 19 He considered that God is able to raise people even from the dead, from which he also received him back as a type.

Our "good works" is to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. That is all.

John 6:28 Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”

Looks like we win the argument.

It’s a shame that he won’t embrace God’s love, but we can’t force truth on anyone.

It really is that simple. It is a shame there are those that try to make it so difficult

I’m always amazed at how people make something seemingly so simple have a way of making it complex.

Spiritual pride will do that to a person.
