However, the thief on the cross had only those few moments to acknowledge his own condition, seeing Jesus for who He is, and for this would be with Jesus as He left this world.
Not everyone has that opportunity while they're dying.....but that example should tell us all that we really don't know ones state of their eternal soul as they leave this world.
