Well here’s my comment....

Many of today’s customs, rituals and symbols used in the Catholic Church can be traced back to the 4th century, when Constantine permitted the process of converting the official religion of the Roman Empire from Paganism to Christianity

What Julian the Apostate saw in Christianity’s ascendency is Charity and giving. Contrast that to today when most “charity” has been delegated to government agencies and the few charities still run by Christians is regulated by governments. No wonder that Christianity is moribund in the West.
