I have heard some priests and bishops from the Orthodox Church claim that aliens are demons. That’s probably not the answer NASA wants, though.

All the skeptics have already answered, and while I agree with all their answers, I’ll attempt to answer it from a NON-government waste skeptic POV.

Most of the people whose religion is science wouldn’t freak out when proof of life (distant past, or present), is found on Mars. Those aren’t the people the gubmint is worried about. They’re worried about the religious people who might believe that live on Mars disproves some tenets of their religion, and get all “War of the worlds” like. So, they bring in the leaders to discuss all of that, and for what messaging they should use to assuage those concerns among their respective congregations.
