Thing is, as I understand it,back then wine was safer to drink than water.🤔

I recall hearing that about 5% are alcoholic, and 30%
drink more than is good for them.

Why not? Luther did. Freedom should be celebrated.

He should preach the gospel.

Water to “grape juice” C’mon man!

Lower alcohol content back then, C’mon man!

As a product of an alcoholic household, I have nothing but disdain for drunks!

I personally, no longer drink alcohol, although I used to.

I know what it feels like to wake up sick, dying of thirst, craving that “hair of the dog” cure.

I remember what a complete A$$hole I had been, how I had embarrassed myself, almost gotten in fights, spent too much time with drunk women, drove a car back from an event at 115 mph logically (impaired logic) thinking that I would get there twice as fast and therefore be half as likely to fall asleep at the wheel.

It was truly a “Jesus Take The Wheel” moment.

He knew me as I was knitted in my mother’s womb. She even tried to douche me out, God would have none of that.

I was HIS child, not hers. Although I did not know Him until much later in life, He knew me and would never forsake me. He loved me. He protected me, (so many times that I would not have survived without His help).

When He finally revealed Himself to me through His word, the scales dropped from my eyes and I could see all the times he saved/protected me and His unwavering/undeserved love for me.

So, yeah, alcohol is bad for you. Many (most) people can’t drink moderately. Alcohol by design breaks down your inhibitions. Just ONE more, ONE for the road.

Abstain if you choose/can. Moderate as best that you can. Learn to recognize when enough is enough (usually just BEFORE that “one more”).

Allow ALL of your other Christian beliefs to be on high alert. Flirting with a woman, not your wife, is WRONG whether alcohol is involved or not.

Legalistically calling something TABOO that is not portrayed as such in the bible, is WRONG! Temptation is REAL, ask Jesus.

Wrongly forbidding something only makes one more curious.

RE: Why not? Luther did. Freedom should be celebrated.

Yes, with caution and care.

That’s what the article is all about.

Like any and all things; if it causes you to sin, you shouldn’t do it. Jesus had a parable referring to this.
People pound down a ton of food, no one bats an eye, for example.

So there is an epidemic of Christian Leaders rubbing the fact they can drink in the faces of folks who choose not to???

Really???

I must admit, I’ve never seen this in my life, and I’ve raised many a glass with men fo the cloth over the years... never seen a one, ever belittle someone who doesn’t drink.

“But please don’t bash those who practice total abstinence.”

Works both ways, doesn’t it? There are plenty of abstainers who put on a “holier than thou” attitude towards anyone who indulges in a sip.

” every party and wedding has at least one who shames themselves”

Yes, because people traditionally drink alcohol at weddings, and have since the beginning of time. Which is why the attempt to pretend that Jesus wasn’t making wine for the wedding isn’t convincing in the least.

A lot of church teaching explains the wine in Scriptures as grape juice. I don’t know how you can have pedestrian grape juice and the good stuff, but someone maybe can explain it to me. IMO and supported by scripture, Jesus partook of the Vino, and even said he would not do it any longer until he returns. As in the second coming. Beer and wine are not considered verboten, again IMO. Spirits distilled and many times higher in alcohol content are explicitly made powerful to make you drunk. Being a drunkard is a sin, like other things men do with men. Ask forgiveness for your shortcomings, but don’t view the “gift” as a license to sin.

Before modern food preservation technologies you couldn’t keep grapes from fermenting. The skins were literally colonized with natural yeast. Fermentation preserved it’s food value and provided people with a safe drink.

Seems like the big issue is flaunting it.

If someone feels OK with a glass of wine or beer with a meal on occasion, that’s their business but in light of the vast number of people who struggle with alcohol, they should NOT be bragging on it or flaunting it.

That is not acting with all due Christian charity. It is putting a stumbling block in front of others.

The comments about gluttony are also correct. I worked with an obese Baptist once and he said that eating was the only thing God didn’t condemn, so Baptists ate. I guess he missed the part about gluttony.

In the OT sacrifices wine and “Strong Drink” were often required. It is well known that the yeast on the outside of the grape is what ferments it.

Numbers 28:7-8

Then the drink offering with it shall be a fourth of a hin for each lamb, in the holy place you shall pour out a drink offering of strong drink to the Lord.

“To uncover your fathers nakedness” is a Hebraism. Look it up, but it has to do with sexing up his wife.

To: Alas Babylon!

That is my experience too. I have quit “drinking” as in habitually imbibing. I have one beer in my fridge, in case someone comes over.

Up here in Pennsyltucky it’s not Baptists, it’s Mennonites. And the joke AMONG Mennonites is to never invite just one of them to your party; and for the same reason.

I believe Thomas Welch, a teetotaler Methodist, discovered a way to pasteurize grape juice to prevent fermentation. I grew up Methodist. When the minister once decided to use wine for communion, the people pitched a fit, and we went back to Welch’s.

Not in Noah’s case, unless you are suggesting that Noah’s sons sexed up their mother.

Perhaps you should do a thorough study of the wine used in Biblical Days. You will discover, if it was fermented; the Jews watered it down to such an extent, getting drunk on it was virtually impossible. With regards to Jesus creating wine; He coiuld create nothing imperfect, and fermentation is a break down of perfect juice. Do you believe the Bread He produced on the mountainside was molded;or the fish He produced on the mountainside was spoiled. I think not.
