PING to the FReeper Foxhole!

If you would like to be removed from this list, send me a BLANK freepmail with "REMOVE" in the subject line.

(Apologies if you've already asked to be removed and were pinged. I've had computer problems and lost my most current ping list. Sorry, Jen)

This battle, though victorious, proved costly for the British. Of the 2400 British soldiers in Howe's command, the 1054 casualties accounted for nearly forty percent of their ranks. The American casualties were 441, including 30 captured, with most being inflicted during the retreat. The battle served to proved to the American people that the British Army was not invinsible. It became a symbol of national pride and a rally point of resistance against British rule.

1986 Christa McAuliffe astronaut/teacher, dies in Challenger disaster
1986 Ellison S Onizuka Hawaii, Major USAF/astronaut, dies in Challenger disaster
1986 Francis R Scobee Washington, USAF/astronaut, dies in Challenger disaster
1986 Gregory B. Jarvis Detroit Michigan, payload specialist/astronaut, dies in Challenger disaster
1986 Dr Judith Arlene Resnik Akron OH, astronaut, dies in Challenger disaster
1986 Michael J Smith Beaufort NC, Commander USN, astronaut, dies in Challenger
1986 Ronald E McNair Lake City SC, astronaut, dies in Challenger disaster

What a sad memory. I had the pleasure of meeting Major Ellison Onizuka when I was stationed at PACAF HQ in Hawaii. He came to Hawaii before the Challenger launch to do some public relations work and to visit his family. I arranged a speaking engagement for him and drove him to it and introduced him. He impressed me as a brilliant scientist who was humble and comfortable to be around. He gave me a mission patch that I still have stored in a box of treasured mementoes of my Air Force career.

RA, I'm sure you also remember this very well. :-(

Good morning fellow freepers, veterans, and residents of the foxhole. What a wonderful subject! I am re-watching the Mel Gibson movie 'The Patriot' and still believe it is a 'keeper'.

New to G. I. Memories: (1) American Gulf War Veterans Association, and (2) I added a link to VetsCoR - 'bout time!

I suspect there are very few of us who don't have memories of that terrible day in January.

One of mine is a video clip that was shown as part of the live feed, but never shown again. One of the cameras was on young family members of the crew...I don't remember which one...and the disbelief in their eyes, the questions asked..."What happened? This isn't happening, is it?"...then the realization of what they were watching, the breakdown...

That was indeed a sad day.

Dr. John Warren, brother of Joseph, was also there, attending the dead and the dying. As usual in any war, this battle was fought by the few as the many watched.

Ever been to the Bunker Hill monument? It's in the middle of a heavily populated Charlestown neighborhood; there used to be 5 acres of open land around it, but four of those were sold off for residential development to raise the money to finish the monument.

Thanks for the ping.

Some give credit for that great quote to General Israel Putnam of Connecticut.

Besides being one of the three or four most important figures in the patriot movement in New England, Dr Warren was also did groundbreaking work in treating smallpox, standards for qualifying physicians, etc. He's a fascinating figure & I'm surprised he doesn't receive as much attention as does Revere, the Adamses, etc.
