Here's a good "before" pic of Mikuma to compare to your "after" pic. The mainmast and aft superstructure were destoyed when her own torpeodes exploded. The wreckage on top of "X" turret is a USMC SBD.

The Washington Naval Treaty of the 30's....interesting to see how BU SHIPS answered the Mogami class of Japan in turret arrangement.
Here USS Savannah has her new 5"-38's on raised mounts for "Super Firing" position.
The Brooklyn class were a nice design for the 30's..with room to augment secondary battery allong with 40 mm AA.

The Mogamis were built as triple 6" and regunned to twin 8" before the war. I wonder if they would have been more useful with 6". We found out at Guadalcanal the 8" rate of fire was too slow. Of course, with their torpedoes, the Japanese didn't reley on gunfire as much as we did.
The S. American navies sure liked the Brooklyns. They kept 3 or 4 around for a long time. Remember the General Belgrano (ex-Pheonix).

Thanks for that info..Was not aware of the re-gunning of the Mogami class prior to the war.
Most of Japans warships look really weird..at least to me.
However;Yamato and Musashi were sharp looking Battleships.
