Quayle was alright. So, I guess, was Bush. Nixon was good as well.

But back before Nixon, when vice presidents knew that they should be seen (as little as possible) and not heard (at all), they may have been even better (with a few exceptions, like Aaron Burr and Henry Wallace).

I think it was LBJ who started the idea that they had to have their own platform or portfolio or responsibilities (and his wife Lady Bird who came up with the same idea for First Ladies). It was another power grab. Things were better when they were just figureheads.

Pence was the only VP whose actions were meaningful in any way (and I think the criticism of him is way overblown) … and in that case he was carrying out one of the only formal responsibilities he had as President of the Senate.

No one held a gun to his head. He could have (should have) called in sick that day. Leahy would have plunged the knife. But you say Pence was carrying out his formal duty? Why? He didn't have to. A decent man would have refused and resigned. Pence could have refused, thrown the electoral process into chaos, avoided J6 and the overthrow of the United States of America via Joe Biden.

But Pence WANTED to stab Trump in the back. The Steal would not have been possible if it were not for Michael Richard Pence. Yeah, you're right. Pence's actions WERE the most meaningful in any way. Even if LBJ was directly responsible for ordering the hit on Kennedy - what Pence did was even worse.

This being true, Pence wins my vote for the most evil and corrupt SOB VP ever.

First Ladies? That gives me an idea. I should run a thread discussion on the best of and worst of all First Ladies.

I kind of like Aaron Burr myself. Except for, you know, the shooting part.

“You gotta be kidding - he was the deep state plant.”

Reagan and Bush worked very well together. Deep State or not, Bush’s experiences provided Reagan with clarity on what was going on in the world.

Seeing what has become of his Democrat Party, HHH looks better and better than he did from 1965-1969.

One of the few Rats of the modern era who thought the US should be sovereign and be capable of defending itself.

Sorry to say but Bush Sr. and Cheney were Deep State players who have shackled us with more government control in the guise of the Patriot Act. Bush Sr. ran the CIA which proves his Deep State credentials. History will not be kind to Cheney either.

Maybe a list of First Ladies, and opinions, would get more response. They seem more active and effective.

I don't disagree with you. I am inclined to ignore this thread from this point forward, since I now have no idea what anyone would even mean by a "good" VP.

VPs rarely make any decisions independent of their Presidents, so there's no objective way to measure them. So the question is really pointless unless you're measuring based on competence, not politics.
