I believe the Harvest Moon is the first full moon after the first day of Fall. I'm open to correction.

I get confused. There's something to do with two full moons in one calendar month; I'm not sure if that's a Blue Moon or a Harvest Moon - but I think Slowboat is right.

It's just getting dark out now, and I don't think the moon will come over the eastern horizon for quite awhile this evening....but we'd like to see a cloud or two - our summer "monsoon season" consisted of exactly one half inch of decent spritz about 6 weeks ago.

Blue Moon is the second full moon in a month. It's also a wonderful little song.

"I agree, it's kind of strange for all of these things to be happening at once. I don't think Toutatis is large enough to be causing unusual gravitational effects, but it does seem like quite a bit of coincidence."

Must be "Planet X" passing by then. ;-)

Some News Articles are also talking about the abundant of Spiders that are showing up, meaning it is a bit unusual to see so many spiders coming out at this point, don't know if this has to do with anything or the Asteroid...

A "red" moon is a common occurrence; they happen several times a year. It just has to do with the bending of light rays near the horizon and the relative position of the sun & moon at moon rise.

"Harvest moon" is just a name for a particular full moon during the year. There is also the Wolf Moon, Sugaring Moon, Barley Moon, Hunter's Moon, Sturgeon Moon, Strawberry Moon, and others. Indians had other names for them: Two in Lakota lore are the Moon of the Plums, and the Cherry Blossom Moon. They just designated the lunar month before most people had a calendar on their wall.

California & Alaska have earthquakes on a regular basis, even large ones. There were a couple of 6-range quakes in Alaska in the past couple of weeks or so, and another 5+ in Southern California last week. Also some 5-6 range ones in the Atlantic in the last couple of weeks. There are usually several hundred a year that size around the world, and even several 7+ quakes per year. Most are just in places where they don't do damage or even get noticed by anyone except seismologists.

Hurricanes run in cycles, and we're entering a known and expected portion of a cycle that brings more, and more severe, storms than the relatively calm portion of the cycle we're leaving.

Volcanoes in Hawaii erupt frequently; one has been erupting steadily for the past several years, and the other one expected to erupt does so rather frequently. Other erupt less frequently, but eruptions is what slowly built the Islands, and is still building them.

Mt St Helens has had several minor eruptions since she blew, and the impending one is another little one. All the Cascade Mountains are volcanoes, and some are still quite active. Mt Shasta erupts on average every 300 or so years, and on that basis is "due". Several volcanoes in Alaska erupt rather frequently also, as do others around the world...Stromboli, Etna, Popocatepetl, and some in Japan, the Philippines, and many more. Many we never see or know about, because they are on the sea floor.

Asteroids "pass earth" all the time, and this one does every few years, just like some of the comets that return periodically.

What does it mean? Life on earth is fascinating, and we should sit back and enjoy the show!

Now that you mention it, I have noticed a LARGE number of spiders every where I go. (I have a love hate thing with spiders too. They ooog me out and facinate me at the same time.) But yes, I have seen more spiders than usual.

Maybe something LARGER out in the vast darkness that NASA isn't talking about has something to do with the strangeness?! Although, if it were LARGE enough to effect our planet, don't you think we would be able to see it with our naked eyes by now?

I vote for a large breakup and impact on Mecca, Medina, the Kaaba, Riyadh, Tehran, Falluja, Najaf, Damascas, the eastern part of Ottawa...and PARIS!

Gee, thanks, I'm in the eastern part of Ottawa. Can I vote for the Glebe or Barrhaven, instead?

No, I won't try to see it. Too bright for me with binoculars with the full moon, and my telescope is packed away in storage.

There's Harvest Moon, Blue Moon, By the Light of the Silvery Moon...

Then there is the Hunter's Moon, the full moon following the Harvest Moon. Both are left overs from our agrarian roots: farmers of old worked by the light of the Havest Moon to get in the crops. With the advent of the Hunter's Moon, they loosed their hounds and went hunting to put game on the table. (Possom and sweet potatoes -- yuck!)

A newsman sees a spider and panics! Spiders and insects are always scurrying about this time of year searching for snug places to winter over, that's all.
