Somehow I seriously doubt you've studied the legal opinions of Thomas and Scalia in a meaningful manner. I don't mean to be rude but it's not clear that a layman could appreciate the differences between the two justices. Assuming you are a trained lawyer, a number of the other justices rely on Thomas, not Scalia, for clarification on the case at hand; his memory of case facts, and ability to analyze their relevance is obviously a trait that is sought after.
There is purpose behind the put-downs of people like Reid against Thomas, or the left-wing racism against Condoleeza Rice (ie: Ted Rall labeling her a "house n_____"). Of course, you can be naive and assume that it's merely coincidental.
