Actually, I wasn't kidding...even here in WA, we have marked evacuation routes...because of the topography, some of them might be unusable with short notice situations, but at least some attention has been directed to the possibility.

I haven't been down the whole coast, but Seattle should be protected by the Olympic Peninsula, Oregon is pretty steep, and so is Northern California. Of course there are exceptions, and a lot of people could get hurt, but it's nothing like as vulnerable as some coastlines.

Most of the West coast has high bluffs or cliffs, so a tsunami would only carry away structures down near the water.

You mean all those houses the lefty Hollywood types live in?

We (Central Oregon Coast) just had a bouy go off coarse and land way N. up in Washington due to a severe storm.

My thought has been would they be any good if a Tsunami came through? Or can they be knocked off coarse which renders null the info they provide.

Some of the waves could still come in on the Sound, is my understanding. It might cause some flooding at lower elevations. We are up in elevation far enough that I am not too concerned about the water where I live, though.

Maybe CA can't afford them, with the budget crunch 'n' all.

The reason I asked was I definitely remember seeing evac signs all down 101 this summer through WA and OR, but can't remember any after Brookings....was just a little curious.

I understand but where you are you have a much greater chance of a tsunami than calif.......we on the other hand have a much greater chance of a good old fashioned earthquake....not many cities on the coast north of SF and the ones that are are usually on quite high cliffs and bluffs

Question for you.
Does CA have clearly marked "Tsunami Evacuation Route" signs along the coast roads?

It's been a while since I've driven along the PCH.

They did, but between the earthquakes, landslides, forest fires, elitest liberals such a babs(NIMLEBY), etc., there aren't any left. The state budget won't allow for replacements. The solution will have to be a grassroots endeavor with hand painted signs on scrap plywood.

those boneheads are pretty far down south away from tsunami activity but earthquakes and in the last few years, many of the cliffs have eroded and in Orange county, many houses have actually fallen off the cliffs into the oceans....unfortunately, these guys were most likely Republicans........

Small tsunamis have hit the west coast of the United States in 1946, 1960 and 1964, following moment magnitude >9.0 events in the Aleutian Islands, Chile, and Alaska, respectively. Cresent City, California was particularly damaged by the 1964 tsunami.

Small tsunamis have been generated locally (to southern California) in the 1812 Santa Barbara Channel and 1927 offshore Lompoc earthquakes.

Also those of us who live on the coast here in the PNW have had tsunami info integrated into our lives, it is not new to us.

Even more so for me having felt 2 earthquakes here in Newport, Oregon in a six month span in 2004 nothing 17yrs prior.

Well, if that volcano is turned into bombing range, one could chip off and landslide that mountain into the sea little by little, taking a dollar in pennies, as it were.

Or, they could turn it into a golf course & get a bunch of guys with my skill level pay to play there.

Might as well make a little money while solving yer landslide cum tsunami problem.

Well, if a tsunami hits the west coast of the U.S., it's a fair bet me and mine won't live to see another day. We're right on the beachfront and travelling inland on California's ridiculously crowded roads is a lesson in futility. Even if we had a full 24 hours advance warning, we wouldn't be able to get more than 10 miles in unless we walked...armed to the teeth.

You don't need to get 10 miles inland.

Even in Aceh the tsunami didn't go 10 miles inland.

You'll easily be able to walk inland a couple miles.

The has also been some recent work on tsunamigenic waves caused by sloughing of mass portions of the Hawaiian Islands. Good evidence exists to suggest that the former eastern half of Maui broke away and slid into the Pacific abyss, setting up a gigantic tsunami-like wave that smashed into the west coast of North and South America.

Such waves have been termed "mega-tsunamis.""
