Mr. Ledeen's various paragraphs are very much at odds with each other. In some places he refers to "very large scale demonstrations," and later he describes "hundreds of Iranians" out for a night of partying.
The way the posting is formatted, it's difficult to tell which paragraphs are Ledeen and which are quotes from the Reuters story.

Generally speaking, the comments about the "hundreds" and the "partying" are from Reuters. The comments about "thousands" and "violent protests" are Ledeen.

What we should ahve done is mount a rescue operation that had a chance to work, back in 1979, as soon after the hostages had been taken as possible.

The Army never thought that Carter's let's-run-around-in-the-desert-and-hide operation would have worked.

The alternative that might have would have been to drop a ring of Daisy Cutters around the embassy. Think concentric circles - the inner 1 mile in diameter, the outer 3 miles in diameter, with everything in between smoldering wreckage.

Then air-drop in a battalion of Rangers to secure the embassy area.

With fixed wing operating over the newly-created obstacle zone, we could have extracted the hostages and the Rangers at our leisure.

If done within the first couple of months of the embassy takeover, it would have worked.

Faster, confound it. -Michael Ledeen

I knew the variation on faster, please would be a gooser on this piece, because it especially applies. Even liberal outlets who have grudgingly jumped on the bandwagon have been saying the USA needs to keep its foot on the gas pedal during this phase.

I understand that, but I don't agree.

What we should be doing, at this point, is preparing to respond forcefully if Syria decides to pull a Tienaman.

Should Syria, or Hezbollah for that matter, decide to resort to violence to preserve the current puppet regime, we should have already been prepared to respond instantaneously.

But if Syria decides to withdraw, we should let them.

"Bush, you told us to rise up, and so we have. Why don’t you act?"

I've seen some messages on the Internet from the Iranians that they hope for support but not by military actions, and on this news, the protesters are asking for support. What do they want President to do? Attack or not? Or do they want weapons smuggled in their country?

I think there's a lot we could do to destabilize Iran short of crossing their border with the tanks. Certainly, we should diplomatically and clandestinely support a well organized opposition.

"Carpe Diem, Mister President.
But above all, the clever stratagem adopted by the administration ignores Machiavelli’s greatest lesson: Leadership is all about winning and losing, not about elegance and deep thinking"

"Don't stand back and admire the flames. Push the dictators in,"

INDEED!
I hope they heed your words, Dr. Ledeen.
