Bush Interview: "This should not be an amnesty program"
Houston Chronicle ^ | August 2, 2005 | JULIE MASON Interview with George W. Bush

Posted on 08/02/2005 1:08:49 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

***.........On immigration reform, the president said he hopes to resolve differences with members of the Senate who are pushing for a more lenient law for illegal immigrants seeking work in the United States.

"This should not be an amnesty program," he said.

Bush's plan would provide temporary visas to guest workers. They would have to leave afterward, and program participants would get no special consideration when they apply for legal residence.

"It's very important for the American people to know immigration reform will be done with a border security initiative that makes it clear to the people that we will do everything we can to stop illegal people from coming into our country," Bush said.

He said a well-run guest worker program would help border security by taking pressure off the Border Patrol. If those who wish to enter the country to work can do so legally, he reasoned, fewer will try to infiltrate the border secretly.....***

If it was strictly enforced, I wouldn't have a problem with a guest worker program, but I have my doubt it will be.

If those who need to get in can do so legally, they won't rush, but will wait.

The problem is in the proposing. When these things get proposed to Congress, aliens feel as though they have an incentive to get in so they can take advantage of it early. They'll figure that if they already have a job here, their employers will be more likely to give them preference over those who've been waiting in line legally.

Rather, somenthing that focused on financial incentives (say it cost 3 times the amount to apply once you were already inside) would more likely create a rush to Mexico, so as to get in cheaper.

I have a better idea: How about not letting illegals take part in the program at all? That way they'd have a disincentive to cross the border illegally. That's been one of the proposals in Congress, which as I said has been all but ignored by the GOP leadership. Why?

No prize, just the plain hard truth that many people refuse to accept about many, if not most, illegal aliens.

Looks like you have all the La Raza talking points downpat....the best way to do this is to enforce federal law on these employers ( a few nationally publicized busts would get the ball rolling) and cease all welfare style benefits to them (except for emergencies)and the vast majority of these people would deport themselves or else get in line with those wanting to be here legally.

Oh yeah....3 questions:

1) Why do we constantly hear that all they want to do is come and work when in reality they cost HONEST taxpayers tens of billions yearly to support them...why is that?

2) Why do we have a double standard now in this country where some employers that hire Americans are forced to pay several types of payroll taxes when at the same time numerous other companies in the same community BREAK FEDERAL LAW by hiring illegals, BREAK FEDERAL LAW by EVADING numerous payroll taxes & pay their new employees minimal wages knowing that the taxpayers will be forced to supplement other living expenses.......do you really want to live in a banana republic?

3) Why at a time when there's so much emphasis on Homeland Security do we see white haired old folks in airports being shook down by the security personnel while our borders are still porous enough allow numerous murderers and rapists to enter and "terrorize" numerous innocent Americans....why is that?

I have a few more but if you can answer mine, I'll answer yours.

So....let see here....your solution to all the freebies is to continue to allow more people in who've never paid a dime into the system, are not even citizens and care nothing about this country to attach themselves to this welfare travesty we have and continue to suck us dry.....is that it? That's just a real good solution to one of the main problems that's bankrupting this country.......is this the same thought process you use with your clients.....all two of them?

As far as #2 let me tell you amigo that there's a hell of a lot more honest small businessmen out here trying to do things the right way as opposed to the relatively few "plutocrats" (from the La Raza playbook?) you talk about and they are furious with the sellout by the fedgov in favor of the multinationals who care nothing about the future of this country at all......you must not get around too much do you...those two clients must keep you pretty busy or you're just a little slow.

As far as this other nonsense about 3 questions.......what the hell do you think these people are going to say to get in this country......they'd lie thru their teeth and sell their firstborn to get in here and get on the gravy train.....and gee, would they ever lie to us? If your solution is to have them answer three questions you're a bigger simpleton than I had you pegged for.......sure you're not bayourod in drag?

a nationwide prop200 is not a bad idea at all. it might even be a way to roll back our own bloated socialistic programs...., which hourly illegals that work at big corporations support out of their witholding, by the way.

Are you talking about those illegal aliens who claim 10 or more dependents on their W-2's so they'll have little or no withholding taxes taken out of their paychecks? Then they can claim the Earned Income Credit when they file their Federal Income Tax Forms so they can actually end up with a net gain when it comes to "paying" their income taxes.
