In a REAL state, Rhode Island would be a county. No offense to Rhode Islanders!

How true and I once lived there and gave birth to my second child there. I still love RI and love to go back there. Newport is awesome.

Let's not forget the other factors that make these states places where nobody in his right mind would open a business (besides ridiculous taxes, of course): an extreme regulatory environment (compounded by a grant and exemption obsession that makes managing a business a nightmare while feeding a colossal army of worthless, snivelling bureaucrats); the highest energy costs in the country; and a union-driven entitlement mentality coupled with a nanny-state workers's comp situation that makes workers too expensive and worthless to pay for.

Eventually, folks have to move where the jobs are -- and where honest businessmen can actually afford to provide those jobs.

Looking at 2008 the GOP needs to hold it's territory, especially OH and FL because the are big and the mountain west states because they are softening.

The Dems need to hold all their states, Minnesota and Wisconsin are very purple and pose problems for the Dims, and pick up an OH or FL.

And since it is easier to hold territory than to conquer territory, the GOP does have a structural advantage right now. So the battleground will be FL, OH, CO, NV, AZ, MN, WI, IA, NH, NM, and possibly MI and PA but those two are less likely to flip than many others mentioned.

Another advantage for the GOP in 2012 is the declining importance of NY, MA. If 2004 was replayed under the 2012 electoral map the GOP could lose OH and still win, but Florida is essential.

That's all true, but you forgot they also abort themselves.

I bet those states will raise taxes even more to cover tax losses (from the exodus). More people will continue to leave and they'll still be wondering why.

Yup, they're in a downward spiral. The libs don't have simple common sense, nor do they understand, Economics and Accounting,

We made both of our children take a minimum of three Economics and two Accounting classes in college. If not, ZERO funding for their education.

Today they're both staunch Conservatives!

Florida got redder from 2000 to 2004 despite or because of it's northern influx. Explain that?

The area from Palm Beach down to south of Miami - Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade Counties, had an earlier influx of New Yorkers, and other undesirables from the northeast. They are older, and have a higher death rate, than the areas in the southwest and central parts of the state. Thus, a lot of the dyed-in-the-wool Commie Libs that live there are at long last beginning to croak.

But the new wave of northeasterners are as likely to come to the Gulf coast, or the central part of the state for one basic reason. Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade Counties are, to a large extent, built out - no more room. Oh, and there is a water issue which impacts those counties more than it will the ones further north.

Almost every state got redder in 2004 compared to 2000 just as every state got bluer in 1988 compared to 1984. Florida is getting bluer over time if you check presidential results over the last 20-30 years.

What are they going to do with all the taxpayers are gone and they are left with the rats and welfare

A Republican President will promise that "we will not let the Northeast die" and offer billions of dollars of aid. A Republican Congress will appropriate the money. :-(

We plan on moving from New England and moving to rural Texas when we retire.

We won't be criticizing the locals because we plan to stay. :-)

Massachusetts will not lose two seats next census, they will lose 1 tops. Even if they did lose 2, why would they stop calling for the abolition of the electoral college? Even the flaming liberals in Vermont would probably be in favour of getting rid of the EC.

If the republicans lost Ohio, they would probably also lose Nevada, Iowa and New Mexico as well which are weaker republican states so it would still be game over.

Oh, and one other thing. Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade Counties are progressively becoming more and more Hispanic and black. Which may be why the transplanted liberals are moving to the southest coast and central areas of the state. ("Do as I say, and not as I do.")

Let's demonstrate the effectivness of the border fence idea by fencing these blue states in before they get out and multiply.

Conservatives are moving out of the liberal infested cesspools...

It's as simple as that, but they'll never figure it out!
