This meant that if an area became hunted out or a more powerful rival took over, the Neanderthals had no-one to turn to while the modern humans did.

I think more likely is that if some neanderthal invented something cool like a crossbow, the technology would not spread. Wheras with humans, if one person knew, they soon would all know.

Further, most invention are the result of previous inventions. If you don't talk to each other, technology slows to a standstill.

Interesting item. No matter what the reason(s) for Neanderthal's extinction, it may be noteworthy to add that they were around longer than we have been around to date. :)

I don't want to oversimplify this, but I'm pretty much convinced that this whole problem of Neanderthal extinction was caused by out of control body odor. After all, who in their right mind would sleep with a Neanderthal who smelled like a goat and had "livestock?"
