RightWhale up there mentioned Hoagland, and Cicero brought up the debunking of the Face, so for amusement purposes I checked out the Enterprise Mission site. Nothing yet on these craters. Hoagland did however have a link to the
hi-res image of the so-called Face on Mars, which is a bit daring, considering it continues the total blowing to Hell the delusional system he's been peddling for years.

Could they get a picture of the hole near sunrise or sun set, or is the MRO sun synchronous? If not, they might be able to get some detail on the sides of the shaft.

There are images from other spacecraft. These look a lot like somebody blacked out something on the image. Highly suspicious.

For one thing if it was a cave, If the sun was shining directly into it one would see the sides for a ways down. If the sun was to the right or left of it, one would see one side or the other for a distance inside. Not if there is significant overhang. You're thinking its more like a shaft than a hole in a large underground volume. Think about a small hole in a large hollow sphere or box. Light can get in, but if it's deep and large enough, not much will get out.

This is a picture of Pingualuit, formerly known as Chubb Crater, in Quebec. A very deep, pure lake fills the crater, limiting the outscatter of light. Not exactly the same as the Martian image, but it looks quite dark. Could be a water-filled landmark, very deep, with some kind of heating keeping it liquid (although the lack of atmosphere would result in considerable evaporative losses. Better send some folks up to check it out.
