My s-i-l from there just got her U.S. citizenship this year. She finally gave up on the U.K. I guess.
And according to the Migration Research Unit at University College London, it is the number of non-Britons, or the "turnover population", that has pushed up the figures for those leaving.
Isn't 196,000 citizens still a heck of a lot?
Statistics is the basic tool of propaganda since it automatically eliminates alternative interpretations.
btt
Interesting to note that half of these people leaving the UK to live elsewhere were not in fact British citizens, but foreign long-term migrants who have lived in the UK for a year or more.
Also interesting to note that immigration is still far greater than emigration and most of our immigrants are now Poles, plus a significant increase in births.
‘Isn’t 196,000 citizens still a heck of a lot?’
Less than 0.3 of a percent? Doesn’t seem high to me, especially when you consider that Brits can work legally anywhere in EU and many tens of thousands retire to Spain every month.
Do you know how many people are leaving the US?
‘My s-i-l from there just got her U.S. citizenship this year. She finally gave up on the U.K. I guess.’
It’s a fair swap - there are thousands of Americans giving up on the US and moving to Britain.
Have a look at:
‘Statistics is the basic tool of propaganda since it automatically eliminates alternative interpretations.’
Self-evidently not as we appear to be interpreting these statistics in at least two alternative ways.
But it's not just how many are leaving, but who. If the people mentioned in the article are part of a brain drain leaving Britain, one that's not being replaced by new immigrants, higher immigration figs won't help the UK.
Admittedly some have seen through the scam.

The people leaving are evenly split between people retiring and skilled workers such as plumbers and builders going to Australia. The incomers are mainly Polish and are either skilled workers like plumbers or builders and also significant numbers of Polish doctors, dentists and IT professionals.
Overall we seem to be doing quite well out of it.
You should welcome the Poles. They are better neighbors, I'm sure than immigrants from other, less civilized locales.
196,000 is too much “white flight” from a country of white natives. The irony has a bit of a sad twist. The same racial shifts are happening here. Lucky for us we have more room to resettle than do our Brit cousins.
‘You should welcome the Poles.’
I do and regularly patronise their delis! :)
‘196,000 is too much white flight from a country of white natives.’
Who said they were white? And who said they were natives? Even if they are, how can it be a ‘white flight’ if more white Poles are arriving than white Brits are leaving?
‘The irony has a bit of a sad twist. The same racial shifts are happening here.’
Well if you think a white majority is a benefit, you should move to Britain. The UK is 92.9% white anglo saxon celtic christian. The US is, if you do as the CIA do and consider latinos to be non-white, what, about 68% white christian?
Too bad we can’t get more well-educated Brits instead of the third-word rabble we generally get.
‘Too bad we cant get more well-educated Brits instead of the third-word rabble we generally get.’
If my countrymen insist on voting Labour again there may be no more well-educated Brits being produced in the future and you’re already getting 25,000 of us a year! :)
Well, I doubt the American education system is any better. We need to form a new country - Educanistan.

Can we call it something else - it sounds rather like the uniform would include a niqab! :(
