Hi, I’m Bob Vila. Today, on this Old Martian Cave we’ll cover skylight options.

Looks like sand worm breathing holes to me, but you never know, maybe the mars mutants are remodeling and adding some skylights...
To: steve86
On a serious note, these could be nifty spots to contsruct habitats.

Well, the first Astronauts on Mars will have to bring Thumpers.

Another set of slides clearly shows heavy equipment tracks going into one of the horizontal caves.
I said the article is not a hoax, not my comments

DIY caves are probably a lot safer.
On Earth, the rule of thumb about caves and tunnels is “What Mother Earth didn’t create, she tries to destroy.” So things are just opposite: natural caves are safer than man made tunnels.
However, Mars doesn’t have as hostile an environment, so caves that would have long ago collapsed on Earth, because they were unstable, still exist on Mars. At least until they are disturbed.
This is why I suggest sending mining robot advance teams to both the Moon and Mars, to create new, safe, stable, horizontal shaft tunnels for habitats. The robots could be mining for a year or two before people even show up.
It would save enormous amounts of money, be much larger and better habitats for people to live and work in, and might even have storage for large amounts of water or ice, in cisterns.
This would mean longer missions, with much more equipment and supplies brought with, and amenities like fresh vegetable gardens.

Looks like sand worm breathing holes to meat 328 to 820 feet across?
Wouldn't want to meet up with one of them! :o)

Did it take NASA this long to confirm the holes were caves? I remember reading about this almost a year or more ago.

Now its not a meaningless question
To ask if theyve been and gone
I remember a talk about north
Carolina and a strange, strange pond
You see the sides were like glass
In the thick of a forest without a road
And if any mans hands ever made that land
Then I think it wouldve showed
