Best sci-fi book I have read on the renegade asteroid was about one that came from outside the solar system and hit the moon. It was big and so fast that it shot across the solar system in three days and plowed right into the moon, blowing it up. They saw it coming and had time to buy a keg and a new lawn chair for the show.

That’s probably it. The cover had a picture of the moon with the top half getting blown off.
