'Cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
there was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with it's life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love
i've always liked this song... A Horse With No Name...
“We have the same thing here,” he says. “These less productive areas are replacing the slightly more productive areas of the ocean.”
But “DEAD ZONE” has such a nicer ring to it than “slightly less productive area”

The real motivation for the sensationalism.
I just read an article on this ‘dead zone’ topic which says that the areas are about doubling every 10 years. This source said the principal cause was nitrogen fertilizer. If so, this is a strong incentive to move toward organic agriculture, and the use of natural nitrogen sources like legume cover crops. This problem may be distinct from global climate change, and more easily fixed by changing some of our habits.
