JOSEPH: One day, Mr. Gower’s only son died of influenza. It was a terrible blow and poor Mr. Gower tried to lose his grief in whiskey... (fades)

GOWER: (drunk) Where you been George? Mrs. Blaine’s called twice! What happened to her prescription ? You lost it, didn’t you?
YOUNG GEORGE: No, Mr. Gower, here it is.
GOWER: Why you good-for-nothing! Don’t you know that the Blaine girl is very sick?

[SOUND: SLAPS GEORGE]

YOUNG GEORGE: (in pain) Mr. Gower, my ear! You’re hurting my sore ear!
GOWER: I’ll teach you to do your job, you lazy kid!
YOUNG GEORGE: Mr. Gower, you don’t know what you’re doing! You put something wrong in that prescription!
GOWER: Shut up!
YOUNG GEORGE: I know you feel bad but, look, Mr. Gower! Look! This bottle you used, this bottle to make the medicine! It’s poison!
GOWER: Poison?
YOUNG GEORGE: Don’t hurt my sore ear again, Mr. Gower!
GOWER: Poison? Oh, George, George...
YOUNG GEORGE: It’s why I didn’t deliver, Mr. Gower! All I wanted was to make sure!
GOWER: (starts crying) George, George...

Think about why George Bailey was considered a hero in this essentially liberal movie. It was because he offered sub-prime mortgages. He was always in conflict with the evil Republican banker, Mr. Potter, who opposed them.

George Bailey didn't entice them in with a low interest rate and then raise it to prime + 2% or more, that he knew they couldn't afford. He may have relaxed the borrowing requirements a bit, but the interest rate remained fixed. He also built affordable housing small but respectable houses that meant people had a better chance of making their payments. He also didn't make loans to collect fees and package them up into portfolios and sell them off to investment banks before the bottom dropped out.

In fact not anywhere in the movie does George Bailey demand the government step in and stop potter or give more housing subsidies to the residents of Bedford falls. No George Bailey in my mind is a true conservative because he realizes that it takes personal initiative to effect change. In fact this seems to be understood by George, Mary, and their friends.

In fact the only thing liberal in the movie is Potter. Far from being a republican, what does he do? Does he fight fair? Does he work to gain the support and trust of the people of Bedford Falls? No he steals the money from Uncle Billy and then sicks the government on George. This is the typical liberal MO.

I remember the first time I ever saw that movie...about 1982, I was alone at the time, thank goodness because that scene made me cry like a baby. even reading it tears me up.

I don't care what anyone says...I'll always love 'It's a Wonderful Life'.

I always liked Nick the bartender.

“Awright, that's it with you two pixies! It's out the door or tru the window!”

Mr. Anderson is a piece of movie history. May he Rest in Peace.

I am so saddened that Bob is gone :( Karolyn is still very much alive and going strong. Have you see the Zuzu charm that she commissioned a jewelry designer to make in tribute to her role in the movie. It’s precious! http://www.heartbeatdesigns.com

I realize I’m a little late but had to respond to you about my “schmaltzy” comment. It’s nice to know someone out there loves this movie.

okay, maybe I should have said “cloying” instead of “schmaltzy,” but you missed the overall point, which is I LOVE this movie - always have, always will - I laugh, I cry, I cheer! The story is timeless and, of course, the old actors in it are just classic. I wish they’d remake it but it’d never be the same.
