“If I had to pick between a black conservative and a white liberal, I’d pick the conservative every single time. Ten out of ten. I just don’t get it.”

Yes. I voted for a black conservative Michael Steele against white Jewish liberal Ben Cardin in 2006 for US Senate (I am Jewish myself).

...by the content of his character

btw, Steele lost 44% to 54%

I’m not conflicted at all. I’m quite Conservative and have no intention of voting for Sen Obama...oh yeah, I’m an American who just happens to be black

If You’re a lib/commie/socialist/progressive/insert-latest-euphemism-for-fascist, well, then you are the enemy, to be treated with contempt, malice, and scorn. Pretty much sums me up. I’m not all that complex...

Pretty much the way I feel and have always felt. I never subscribed to the anyrace-American thing. You are either an American or not. A good example of this was the 100th and 442 divisions of WWII. They were Americans of Japanese ancestry and they called themselves Americans, volunteered to fight and mostly wanted to fight Japaneses but were sent to Italy and Germany to fight. They were Americans, period, as we all are. Otherwise why am I not an Irish-American, Scot-American, German-American and/or English-American? The answer is: I am an American and view all others, regardless of skin color or ancestry, who are born here, naturalized, or legal residents, as Americans, plain and simple. Obama is a marxist and needs to be defeated, I don't care what color he is, he is a useless POS and needs to go away.

IMO racism is when you HATE someone because of their race, not when you want to support one of your own

It doesn't work that way in real life, though. I'm white, and if I come out and say I'll be supporting a candidate because he's white, there would be hell unleashed and I would be called every name in the book.

Another example of how this works is the BET network. If I were to propose a WET (White Entertainment Television), I would instantly be labeled a racist and would have a 0.0% chance of starting such a network because no one would touch it.

True equality is completely transparent, and should not decided by the color of one's skin.

As a Conservative black woman, I too feel this conflict. I am excited at the prospect of Obama getting this far and that our country has progressed enough for him to be a serious contender. On the other hand, I disagree with just about all of his political platform. So as a black conservative, that puts me in a quandary when I would like to support him but cannot if I really stick to my beliefs. God BLess America!

Interesting. Makes me wonder if there were conservative women who were ready to pull the lever for Hillary using that same thought process.

I think I understand a bit why you feel that way, though. Everyone can deny it till they're blue in the face, but there is still an undertone that exists in this country (just look at this forum... jeez.). If only there were some significant event that would erase everything in an instant... unfortunately, that rarely happens, and patience can be a bitch.

I don't know if that makes sense at all. I'm trying to put words to an abstract and I'm out of practice somewhat. ;-)

Just goes to show you how many inches deep is the conservatism of some folks.
I don't even want to think about the integrity of the ones who are paid by the spoken word.

Vote on your principles. This is a tough election as I believe that either candidate will be a disaster, and I’ve thought of voting for Obama so democrats get the blame. However, voting for Obama only for racial issues will be very counter-productive. If/when the country goes very very south, alot of people will link his skin color to be the cause of the coming storm...It may make it difficult for a legitimate black conservative in the future. The country tanking with the first 6.5% black president at the wheel, may set back race relations for some time to come.

I would like to be able to support the first “viable black candidate” and I cannot.

I'm a white conservative, never voted D before. But I supported Obama in the primaries. I actually changed my registration so I could vote for him, and vote for him I did.
Couldn't a black conservative take some satisfaction in the candidacy of a black man, and leave it at that? Or if you must go further, wouldn't it suffice to vote for him in the primary in your state? That would constitute "support."
And what exactly do you want to support? Not his politics, correct? The rise of an African-American to the US presidential race? I'd say that's a reasonable wish. But beyond that, a conservative cannot support Obama to win, or desire to see an ultra-liberal in the White House.
Rejoice, if you would, that a man of mixed race could win the nomination, in spite of his inexperience and the formidable opponent he faced.

“I’m also concerned about the future of this country because of the decline of values and the continued attempted suppression of Judeo-Christian values.”

Then I am convinced that you will not make the mistake of voting for Obama. ;>)

"A glimpse of that possibility was on display on Father's Day, when Obama addressed (albeit rather tepidly) the issue of absent black fathers."

This makes me sick. He just stole Bill Cosby's speech and the media tore Cosby to pieces when he gave it.

When my husband is out with the kids and I am not around they say “What is your wife?” He says “American”. Why can’t people, just be people?

Amen.
For the last 20 years whenever I get these Census forms, I put a big X through the 'ethnic' section and write-in "American".
We make enough divisions between ourselves on our own, we don't need to institutionalize it...

Anyone that uses color as a criteria shouldn’t be allowed to vote at all.

The last time this type of hysteria over selecting a leader existed was when a Austrian corporal used anti-semetism as a platform policy.

Obama is not only NOT Black.....he’s ARAB and VERY RED!
:::::
The Obama campaign claims that Osama Obama has MANY FIRSTS!
I would submit that he is the FIRST QUADRA-COLORED presidential candidate:

** RED, GREEN, BLACK and WHITE ** :-)

Agreed that is racism.

But is not preferring one individual to another because of their race also racism?

What about preferring one individual to another because of their race and in spite of their lesser qualifications?

See, the problem is that if you put the shoe on the other foot, some (maybe not you) would cry about racism. If I were to say that I’m voting for McCain simply because he’s Irish and so am I, then it doesn’t sound so bad - just makes you look shallow.

Now, in this race, if I said, I’m voting for McCain because he is “just like me” - White - then I’d get slammed for being a racist. You can’t have it both ways. Racism is racism. Putting the color of a person’s skin above the content of their character is racism - period.

I’m continually amazed when people advocate for this kind of action and wonder truly what MLK, jr. would say about all of this. I imagine he is rolling in his grave, honestly.

As far as Obama goes... I’m actually more worried about the fact that the Dems are just using him. Knowing that they can get the “black vote”. Democrats have a history of using people when it benefits their goals (like Cindy Sheehan). I’m afraid Obama is another one of these people - God knows he is nowhere NEAR qualified to even run for President! Why else would they propel him like this... They KNOW they can push him to support whatever they tell him to. They also KNOW that he’s an outright radical marxist.

I’m sorry to say this, but IMHO any conservative who even CONSIDERS voting for Obama, knowing what we do about his radical marxist ideology, his positions on the issues, his choice in spiritual mentors and business associates, is taking a direct part in the destruction of our country.

John McWhorter was never really a conservative like some of
the others so I’ll give him a pass. Some of the others are
disappointing me quite a bit.
