These scientists need to read some articles by Dr. Fairbridge. Unfortunately, I can’t find the pertinent reference right now. Dr. Fairbridge wrote about 100 books and 1,000 articles on geophysical, oceanographic, and geological topics. His seminal work, was the influence of the planets an the Sun through the shifting center of gravity of the solar system due to the planets orbits. Naturally, Jupiter and Saturn have a major influence. Once again, one can show a correlation, but it is much harder to show a cause and effect relationship.

Try looking at http://www.spaceweather.com/

They now have a technique to view magnetic anomalies around the Sun, even on the far side!

Space Weather is a great place for following the Sun and its effects.

Thanks for an interesting article. The other thread about the U.S. Geologic Survey teaming with NOAA isn’t such a bad idea I don’t think. Hopefully the geologists could tell the weather guys about long-term climate change.

Jupiter and Saturn affect the sun's movement and its rotation, and hence its sunspot activity ...

...which are both affected by me driving my truck!

Oh yeah, and by cows farting!

Australian astronomers may have found a solution to how far-away Jupiter and Saturn drive the sun's solar cycle.
Huh. Read about this 25+ years ago in a kooky book cowritten by John Gribbin.

Thanks grey_whiskers!

It is gone now. Likely noise in the data. The sun is spotless, sunspot number zero and no large coronal holes. Today is earth aphelion, but we might hit 80 anyway.

barycentre ... now that's a good word one doesn't see to often.

'Cause real 'Mericans spell it barycenter. As in:

Barycentric Dynamical Time (TDB), is the independent argument of ephemerides and dynamical theories that are referred to the solar system barycenter. TDB varies from TT only by periodic variations.
