I thought gun purchase records were destroyed shortly after FBI approval. Are gunstore owners being pressured to supply sales records? This sounds like backdoor gun registration Ad Hoc.

Federal records of the check are destroyed, though Reno didn't do it. Dealers are required to keep the sales records, and to allow inspection. It's a defacto registration, but not one that's easy to abuse. State registration of gunowners has much more potential for that. Hunting licenses too.

So can anybody just gather ownership information? No, only your government keepers.

I thought gun purchase records were destroyed shortly after FBI approval. Nope, the ATF audits the sellers. Gotta keep them records.

Are gunstore owners being pressured to supply sales records? This sounds like backdoor gun registration Ad Hoc. Yup.

If a gun dealer goes out of business, the 4473 forms are stored in an ATF warehouse, he said.

Nope, no registry being made here. Please move along.

These volunteers have pushed us all further down that slippery slope the LibTards have been greasing for the past 60 years or so.

This is positively chilling.

Voluntary test firing my firearms? I don’t think so...

Actually, all the police have to do at this stage is watch the remaining .40 owners that didn’t “volunteer”
I sure wouldn’t want to be under surveyance just cause I did’t volunteer. I still want to know how the ownership information was collected.

That's the idea, not exactly "voluntary". My guess they'll simply interview the non-volunteers, pointing out the advantages of "volunteering", particularly to anyone without an ironclad alibai for the time of the shooting.

I think that happened in some town in Germany or France. Woman was raped and killed, and the police asked for DNA samples from the male citizenry.

Only a few didn’t, and they were ostracized by their fellows.

Sorry, don’t have a link, it was a couple of years ago, I think.

The whole purpose of this is to reduce the pool of suspects, so they don't waste time investigating the innocent.

However, they still have to prove the guilty, guilty, so you don't have to cooperate. Helping the police can only work against you. On the other hand, you want the guilty to be punished.

I am very conflicted about whether or not I would cooperate with this. On the other hand, if they started pressuring me to do so, I would dig in the old heels.

Much as I want cops to succeed in the “server and protect” department, seems like information gathering like this would result in lawsuits against the police departments. So is this really a common investigational technique? Or is it just this singular instance?

How could they tell it was a Glock, rather than one of the other manufacturers?

I’m ashamed of the O.S.B.I. This voluntary test is absurd. I think it is nothing more than a publicity stunt.

The Glock used in the murders might not have been purchased locally, or even legally. And if they want to include all .40 Glocks in the area, they should remember to test the ones in possession of law enforcement agencies.

I would not submit my firearms for voluntary testing.

This article was already posted a few days ago. You can read the flame wars there.

Oh well.

Too bad the flames aren't crawling up the butts of the folks who sent out the letters.

I don’t know how often it’s been done in this fashion. The purported purpose was to allow authorities to trace ownership of a firearm involved in a crime, from manufacturer to dealer to purchaser. This use is quite different, but I doubt there’s anything illegal about it. And I suspect the information provided by the “volunteers” won’t be disposed of, rather kept permanently.

See post 18 for the proper response to this outrage.

And btw, that's a 'magazine' in your pocket, not a 'clip'. Remember, the clip goes in the magazine.

LOL.
