In Germany they had all the men in one town "voluntarily" sumit to DNA testing over a rape. Funny thing is, the guy who did it volunteered for the test.
Best!

Never underestimate the stupidity of criminals. See my last post.
Yes, I am surprised the story did not lead off with the fact that all police Glock 40’s were first tested to confirm they were not the murder weapon(s).
“We do not police ourselves, comrade. Just the proletariat, the little people.” /s
I presume by the rifling marks (hexagonal, octagonal, polygonal, etc.).
It’s the “if you’re innocent you have nothing to hide, you should want to prove you didn’t do it” idea on steroids.
Nowadays anyone who doesn’t autoatically forfeit rights and cooperates, is automatically regarded as a suspect and is hiding something they don’t want the cops to see. Cops get pissed off if you don’t let them do their little fishing expedition on you.
More idiotic is volunteering to be part of it in the first place.
...like, say, they know they're innocent?
Anytime you are expected to prove a negative, you are getting screwed.
Can you prove that you’ve never hit your wife?
Can you prove you’ve never shop lifted?
On and on ad absurdeum.
1. That the police pay for any testing involved,
2. That all materials (casing and bullet) be destroyed or returned to me after testing, and
3. That I receive immunity from prosecution for all other past, present and future crimes which might be solved through the use of the test results from my firearm.
I presume by the rifling marks (hexagonal, octagonal, polygonal, etc.).
A great question and very interesting answer.
Where could one find more about identification of firearms by using rifling marks?
Yes. But there also is the problem of false positives. Apparently it happens with DNA evidence, especially as more and more samples are collected (from innocents).
That, and I am not in favor of these soviet-style mass-collections of people to be filtered through to see if the guilty person can be found.
“How could they tell it was a Glock”
Glocks also have a rectangular firing pin that leaves a distinctive mark on the primer.
I wrote the reporter, expressing my own views as well as some expressed here via a vis the “voluntary” aspect and gun registration in general.
He said that he got letters from all over the country raising hell about this approach. The OBI did not come out well on this issue.
I was glad to see that a stink was raised. These authoritarian types will back off - and try again later.
However, I have to confess that since it wasn’t my kids who got murdered, I can take an arms-length philosophical view.
Thank you for shedding light on this subject.
I was thinking of only of the spent bullets and not the mark on the primer.
Breach face, firing pin , ejector, extractor , metal on magazines lips , barrel, etc all leave a forensic tell tale that can ID what manufacture of firearm was used. If this was a 40 SW I would think they have a piece of brass or more that would have the killers thumbprint as well. When he or she loaded that magazine they most likely weren’t planning on a murder. Maybe they were and loaded up with gloves from a new box of ammo. May stood around long enough to pick up their brass ....who knows.
Sad damn deal to kill two young girls. Wonder if they looked at the young ladies same age friends for a possible kid fight turned bad ? I am almost sure they have......just sad.
Those strike me as perfectly reasonable conditions, similar to what I’d request.
Police are allowed to lie to induce a confession. (ussc said so)
I suspect the police know this is 100% useless.
They just want an “in” to talk to the suspect without the benefit of a defense attorney.
From the firing pin impression on the casing, not rifling.
Where could one find more about identification of firearms by using rifling marks?
I would say the scientific answer is "above my pay grade". Maybe more suited for a metallurgist. But in all seriousness, Wikipedia has an entry on rifling that looks fairly detailed, but it's Wikipedia....reader beware. Another possible source of good info on the subject is the NRA fact (blue) book. I don't have mine with me (it stays in the bathroom library at home) but will check it tonight if I can remember.
