Gee, didn't the Drudge rumor mill have Powell giving a pro-Obama speech at the Dem convention about a week or so ago?

Of course Powell is in the mix: he’s the VP choice if the implausible happens and Hillary manages to steal the nomination in Denver. He’d get the black vote to cross over and vote GOP instead of sitting out, thereby guaranteeing Hillary’s defeat.

OTOH, v. Obama/Biden, Sarah Palin is the best choice: she’s solid on the issues the GOP base cares about, an absolute leader in the “Drill here, drill now” movement, and adds female identity politics into the mix to drag the PUMAs to the polls to vote GOP.

Well, then that leaves Tom Ridge at the curb. ;)

“and another reason to vote for Barr.”

I know I’ll get blasted for this - but PLEASE, unless you’re fine with a Pres. Obama and VP Biden - don’t give them a “non-mccain” vote (i.e., one more for them) by voting for Barr or Paul.

I do understand, and like several things about both B & P, HOWEVER, neither of them has a clue what we’re up against when it comes to foreign policy!!! And that’s paramount in the volatile, dangerous world in which we live right now.

I detest much of what Powell stands for, but I would support him as the VP.

He and McCain would accomplish the most important task this year -- keeping Obambi out of the White House. Neither one is likely to run for re-election next time. We could get a true Conservative into office then.

We don’t hate Powell. He’s just a Democrat with (R) after his name.

His policy stands are pretty much liberal. Just not totally loony liberal. But I don’t want him as VP.

This is BS.

I agree. I doubt if anyone at this point knows exactly who will be chosen. Well, maybe a couple of his closest advisers and Cindy McCain. This just keeps McCain's name in the news, which is good, cheap publicity.

Too many negatives.

Most conservatives are not that crazy about Powell.

He’s too old. It would be the Old Ticket.

Why go for someone with that many negatives?

Would he even motivate the black vote? I don’t think he’s ever been a big favorite with that demographic any more than Condi or Clarence Thomas.

RE: #56

Pelosi is re-elected to The Speakers Chair every two years. Basically it’s hers unless/until the Republicans take control of The House.

I’m starting to wonder about some of this stuff coming out of Politico. What the hell are they smoking?

Yes, Colin Powell didn’t show much loyalty to Bush while he was Secretary of State. Bill Kristol predicted he would appear at the Democratic convention and endorse Obama. It doesn’t look like that will happen, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he casts his vote for Obama.

well, one scary thing is that all the word is that he’s been about to endorse B. Hussein Obama - amazed he hasn’t officially already. you know, he’s not really that conservative . . . heck, I even read that Powell may show up at the Dem. Convention this week - guess that’d really tell us where his loyalties lie!

Let's not believe every internet rumor out there. Powell never said publicly he would do so, others did. THEN, because of the rumor mill, Powell denied in person and on tape that he was to attend the Democrat convention. I do not think it is fair to cast aspersions on someone's loyalty on rumors that are actually proven to be false -- directly by the subject of the rumor. REPUBLICANS are not jumping ship.

Or unless the House chooses some other Dem.

“Mitt needs to be the one. Without Mitt, he won’t win.”

you know, at this point, I think Mitt would be ideal, particularly about economy. BUT, here’s the rub - McCain’s people have been great about immediately coming back with ads, etc., of footage of Biden’s slamming Obama and praising McCain (and they’ll use it until Nov.). However, can you imagine ALL the footage they’ll come up (and endlessly run) about Mitt and John’s animosity and mutual insults from the primary?? The only saving grace might be, as Hannity said, that Mitt NEVER praised Obama, as Biden praised McCain.

other than that, I now think Mitt would be the one. Word is that McCain plans to pick someone who’d be ready to be POTUS on day one. And in his case, the voters will be paying particular attention to that factor (unfortunately).

"but I wouldn’t be surprised if he casts his vote for Obama."

Obviously we'll never know unless Powell chooses to make his vote public. I don't want Colin Powell to be President or VP. He served his country well. He's a good man. I wish him well in his continued retirement.

I admire many things about Gen. Powell, but I just don’t think the nasty world of Presidential politics is for him.
