If it were as serious as some are saying, WHY aren't folks being asked to evacuate?...just asking

It is hard to evacuate the United States to isolated tropical areas, and you wouldn't want to even try it unless you were 100% sure.

“If Yellowstone blows, it will take out the entire bread basket of the US, pumping enough material into the atmosphere to have a winter that lasts years. The economy? gone. Our current just in time inventory levels of food and medicine? Gone. And so on and so on.”

Good thing we’ve kept our national manufacturing base, and our world-leading industrial innovation right here in America as a fallback plan.

Oh wait...

It appears to have erupted on a 60,000 year cycle, IIRC, and it's been over 60,000 years since the last eruption.

You're off by a factor of 10. The cycle has been roughly every 600,000 to 700,000 years. The last major one was about 650,000 years ago.

With what's know about Yellowstone asking people to evacuate is saying that an event is imminent. Talk about widespread panic.

I think that’s reason enough to kick Wyoming out of the union.

Yea, the equivalent of a nuclear winter, really will end the world wide economy as we know it.

I interviewed a vulcanologist from Yellowstone a couple of years ago on the Yellowstone supervolcano. He said they believe there are two magma chambers beneath Yellowstone. The thinking is there won’t be a super eruption as long as there are two distinct chambers.

He also said that if there were another eruption the size of the Huckleberry Ridge eruption the North American continent would probably be uninhabitable within a short period of time. I got the opinion he was skeptical if the human species would persist.

One other point: the tectonic plate has been moving southwest over the millenia ... each major Yellowstone eruption has left craters that have been pushed southwest. As the plate moves over the supervolcano, it is becoming thicker. This MIGHT make a major eruption less likely.

If there were a major eruption of this thing, there is nowhere to evacuate to.

We went out to Yellowstone and Mt Rushmore for the Fourth of July and loved it! Every 50 yards you feel like you need to take a picture.
