a 2.5 in France today too
and a volcano erupting to the west of the earlier EQ
That last green-line squiggle is from France, a 2.5 at 22:49GMT. Looking like a bowl of jelly today!
Facinating.
I was watching those wiggles, and didn’t understand what they meant.
It’s such a ‘closed’ system!
Thanks for explaining it to me.
In fact that’s probably the second 7.5 in Indonesia.
A 2.5 in France wouldn’t show up at Yellowstone. And even if they had a huge earthquake in France, it would take some time for the waves to get here. I think in that case it’s about 20 minutes.
Is that normal for them?
That’s what Al gore and all the rest of his followers don’t realize. They CANNOT change ANYTHING.
Haven’t felt anything at all. My brother lives closer and he isn’t reporting anything. I live by Idaho Falls. The last real earthquake I felt was the Challis earthquake in 198—7.3 I’d just as soon not feel any. :-)
Pretty windy yesterday. Not much today.
That area is the most tectonically complex in the world; a zillion little plates. 10+ magnitude 7 quakes and a few 8s in the last 100 years.
I was looking at the list of recent data.
Depths all over the map, not a nice simple subduction zone like Chile at all, you’re right, what a mess.
Here is another question:
I have seen similar squiggle waves on the Mt. Rainier recorders in the past when there were large events. They almost always settle down to the nice little 4 cycles/minute waveform.
What is the significance of that particular frequency?
Is it some kind of core resonance?
That I don’t know; certainly has to do with the “bell ringing” effect of large earthquakes but it’s certainly complicated by the inner and outer core, mantle, and the way the waves are reflected and refracted.
To that level of interest I’d direct you to your local college library/Google Scholar.
Thanks.
Wasn’t sure if there was a simple explanation or not.
BTW, Happy New Year.
Thanks Fred.
On site reports are the best!
Damn that Bush, there he goes again!
The 2 in PA flanked both sides of the Susquehanna River...don’t most old rivers have faultlines under them? People 4 houses down the road from us felt the first but we didn’t feel it at all.
That site I posted is showing another at 7.8 in the same area.
03.01.2009 - 22:33:39 7.8 Indonesian archipelago Indonesia
This was the first big one:
03.01.2009 - 20:04:42 7.6 Indonesian archipelago Indonesia Irian Jaya Manokwari USGS
You beat me to it. We don’t need any magnitude 7.6 in Yellowstone.
Just about the time I think I can get a decent night’s sleep and not worry about the pole shift this kinda crap starts...
;-)
USGS has re-evaluated the two quakes to 7.6 and 7.3.
LOL!
Happy New Year!
