Obviously Bush and Cheney have sold their hurricane machine to the Chinese - who failing to read the directions ran it backwards.

There was drilling work going on at the time by an oil company and they have pretty much been universally blamed for the problem

I have often wondered about the unintended consequences of geothermal drilling, the deep kind that is.

It seems to me that a very deep drill could some day be a conduit should magma make it to the bore hole.

It's probably not likely, but it could happen.

The water pressure might have added hydrostatic pressure, but the fault actions are generally due more to shear stresses than hydrostatic stresses. The water might have changed some material properties of the rock at critical strain points, but is unlikely to have caused the ruptures.

A converse argument might be applied. Brittle fracture is frequently stopped by circular hole bores which penetrate the fracture route. The circular hole acts as a ‘Stress reliever’ using the Dugdale and Rice models of fracture. I suspect actual seismic events are several orders of magnitude greater than the particular actions described.

Do you mean rebuild the dam? They almost had the Teton Dam reservoir filled when it went. But that was due to not following the 5 p’s. They ARE looking to have another go at ‘er. Besides, with the Island Park dam, the Jackson Lake dam, and the Palisades Reservior dam, I’m not sure where they would put the dam thing.

The filling of Kariba Dam in then-Rhodesia caused a 5.5 magnitude quake in 1957.

The new Diamond Valley Resevoir and Dam in Riverside County was built to withstand a moderate magnitude quake expected upon its filling (if didn't happen).

Three Gorges Dam will probably be the greatest engineering marvel and disaster of all times at the same time ( not too long after it’s completed ).
