Don’t forget the year 1816 in America, dubbed “the year of two winters”, or “eighteen hundred and froze-to-death”, when there was snow in June and a killing frost in July and August.

The cause? An eruption of the Krakatoa volcano in Malaya, spewing enough ash to blot out the warming influence of the sun.

Anyone remember Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1986?

Krakatoa was around 1886. Tambora was in 1815, causing the year without a winter — it was much bigger.

Didn't remember the year but the weather did cause failed winter wheat in the central US in that time frame. The good part was that cool/short season summer replacement crops did rather well; IIRC.

Well known for a long time. From a 1969 book:

“This year was perhaps the most terrible that France had ever known. On 12 January, the cold came down. In four days the Seine, all the rivers and the sea on the Atlantic coast were frozen solid. The frost lasted for two months; then there was a complete thaw; as soon as the snow which had hitherto afforded some protection to the land, melted away, the frost came again, as hard as ever. The winter wheat of course was killed as were the fruit, olive and walnut trees; and nearly all the vines; the rabbits froze in their burrows; the beasts of the field died like flies.” (Mitford, Nancy, 1969. “The Sun King: Louis XIV at Versailles”, Sphere Books London 256 p.)

From a 2004 scientific report:

Probably the coldest winter across Europe (as a whole) in a series starting 1500; combining proxy & instrumental data. [University of Berne / RMetS / ‘Weather’ 2004) ]

Yes! Hooray! Hooray! Hooray! I can throw the chainsaw away!

YES! Hooray! Hooray! Hooray! I can finally ripen a tomato!

YES! Hooray! Hooray! Hooray! I won't have to plow my ranch roads anymore!

Have to admit, though, that it is a bit difficult to just toss a yule log on the airconditioner, and stay cool.

Ugh. I hate tattoos, especially on women. Everybody goes apespit for that Megan Fox, but she’s a nasty little thing with all those words all over her body.

On 10 January, Derham logged -12 °C, the lowest temperature he had ever measured

LIAR! Centigrade/Celsius/C scale was devised in 1742. Derham logged a Fahrenheit temperature, which (IF we can trust your conversion skills) was equivalent to a temperature of -12C:

10.4F

Are we to believe that Derham REALLY "logged" 10.4F? Or, did he log a whole number, or maybe 10.5F? Just how small & precise were the divisions of his thermometer?

Nitpicking, I know, but if one expects their "science" to be taken seriously, then they must be equally precise in their use of language.

Yup, I agree.

However, some of the modern young girls think it's cool being or being called a slut.

I’ve read old accounts of this, from some of my German speaking maternal ancestors who left Alsace and sailed from Rotterdam to Philadelphia, joining up with the Moravians in Berks Co., then migrating on foot from PA to the Wachovia Tract in North Carolina, 1753.

Wild animals frozen in their tracks, trees shattering, birds falling frozen, starvation and death all around. That’s why they left. Not sure how they got from Alsace to Rotterdam, in light of everything being frozen, must’ve walked down the river? I don’t know the month of departure, just the year, 1709.

Sunsets were beautiful. After the sun went down, the ash in the upper atmosphere reflected a beautiful, bright pink/red glow for almost 40 minutes.

Ten degrees Fahrenheit does not sound sufficiently cold for the described effects. Sounds like at least -20º F to me.

There aren’t many Glaciers in Colorado (more like small ice fields that don’t quite disappear in summer), but such as they are, they are growing.
