I just passed the link and the article on to all the colleagues in my math department, plus the Department Heads of the other two areas that heavily use arXiv, the NSF-funded free publication venue—Physics and CS—our science librarian and a colleague who is on the mast-head of a free, scientist-run, refereed online journal in my field (any bets such journals don’t count as ‘journals’ under Conyers bill?)

One of my colleagues is subtended to NSF this year. I don’t think this will see the light of day. Still, let’s make sure: any other FReepers in the sciences send copies to all you colleagues, and suggest they send it to all their colleagues with the call to write their Congressmen and Senators. This will go viral and Conyers and the rest of the cosponsors will be made to look like asses.

Still, isn’t the irony almost delicious: supposedly the GOP is ‘anti-science’ and in the pocket of commercial interests. Ha!

The scientific journal system was established in the dead-tree days when the process of gathering scientific papers, editing and publishing for a small audience, then managing the peer review process was expensive. Now that the Internet has made the whole process cheap, the journal want to hold on to their captive audience.

Just like all the other monopolists, the free market won't let them do this, so they reach for government help in forcing the world to do their bidding.
