"The last ice age ended about 12,500 years ago. The ice ages come in two frequencies, every 100 ky and every 40 ky (Milankovitch orbital climate forcing is one cause of the start/end of ice ages), so I’d say we had a way to go before the next “official” one."

Too bad. The thought of mile thick ice sheets bulldozing Boston and New York City into the Atlantic brings me wonderful happy thoughts. I guess we can use the extra time to figure out how to clone us up some mammoths. The glaciation just wouldn't be the same without them.

How many carbon demerits is that for heresy?

Here's one article about the theory that the ice age is being delayed by CO2 emissions:

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/08/070829193436.htm

(Please note: I'm a full-fledged AGW "denier" -- but, I think it's worth considering the possibility that there is a GHG effect & that it's a very good thing.) Unfortunately, I wasn't able to locate another article I've cited on FR before — where the reference to the 8,000 delay was made.

I live in the tropics and have barely had to use my AC for the last five months.

There are many plants that do grow in colder weather, and we can always use cold frames to extend the season.

I have always been in favour of global warming for a longer, easier growing season.

That one was just a little one.

The really big ones happen about every 110-120 thousand years.

Global temps peak.
Then, in about 5000 years, they plummet by like 9 degrees centigrade.

We are, RIGHT NOW, at the “global temps peak” part of the cycle.

Here's something I wrote for my 7th grader's science class recently:

Arnaud Csupo Reporting on What to Do in a Snow Emergency

GRETA: For today’s weather report on this Fourth of July of 2020, we go to our reporter Arnaud Csupo in Buffalo, New York. Arnaud, have you been eating any of those famous Buffalo wings up there?

ARNAUD: Hi, Greta. Unfortunately, as you can see from this photo, about the only wings I’m finding around here are angel wings in the snow. Ha ha ha. And speaking of eating, kids, I know you may have heard your grandparents talk about sprinkling sugar on new fallen snow and eating it, but don’t try it at home. With that white stuff you could also get a large dose of REMs from fallout from all those Chinese atmospheric nuclear tests. And though a certain amount of background radiation is essential for activating DNA repair mechanisms, that’s not going to help you with bone cancer or thyroid cancer from all the strontium 90 and other short-lived radioactive elements wafting our way on the jet stream from the mysterious Orient. We’ve got other things to worry about.

GRETA: We sure do, Arnaud. Tell us, is there any relief in sight?

ARNAUD: Yes, Greta, the good news is that there is relief. The bad news is that we’re just going to have to wait about 100 thousand years before the next interglacial period sets in. Ha ha ha. As you have no doubt heard many times throughout the past decade, the most recent interglacial period we’re just leaving was the longest of the last five. Fortunately there was great technological and social growth during the last 800 years of the second millennium kicked off by the Medieval Climate Optimum. The Medieval Climate Optimum, a natural period of global warming, was believed to have resulted in the release during the 20th century of large amounts of carbon dioxide, the principal food used by plants to produce oxygen. This release, together with an advanced science of agriculture, led to unprecedented levels of food production. Unfortunately, when temperatures began to fall rapidly over a period of twenty years following the 1960s, a pseudo-scientific movement led by an unsuccessful politician, Al Gore, tried to claim that a slight temperature increase over the next decade or so heralded run away global warming that would kill us all. He managed to create a coalition of politicians around the world interested in shutting down carbon-based energy production. He later made a killing by buying carbon offset credits from a company he himself owned. He was able to live with one of the world’s largest carbon footprints—remember that one, Greta? Ha ha ha—and claim that he was doing it all to save the environment.

GRETA: I believe his trial in the Hague for crimes against humanity is scheduled to start in a few weeks, weather permitting.

ARNAUD: It sure is, Greta. Though to be fair, the idea that Al Gore and his merry band of neo-Luddite global warming nuts caused us to tip over into the next ice age by their shut-down of carbon-based technologies is a bit extreme. Studies have shown that the effect of CO2 as a greenhouse gas is logarithmic, not linear.

GRETA: Could you put that in lay-person’s terms, Arnaud? Ha ha ha.

ARNAUD: Sure thing, Greta. This means that if a substance has an effect, the effect will increase rapidly as the amount of the substance increases from zero. But past a certain point, doubling, tripling, or quadrupling the substance will barely increase the effect at all. With CO2, the greatest effects on the climate as a greenhouse gas take place below 100 parts per million.

GRETA: And this means…

ARNAUD: This means that before man had any detectable effect on the level of atmospheric CO2 by burning so-called fossil fuels, the earth had long since passed the point where even doubling the total amount of CO2 would have little, if any, effect on the earth’s temperature.

GRETA: So, we would have been just as well off without all that CO2?

ARNAUD: Not quite, Greta. As you know, carbon dioxide is the principal food of plants. Through photosynthesis, plants convert CO2 into stored chemical energy and give off oxygen. Our current level of CO2 of about 450ppm is still far, far below the level needed for optimum plant growth. On a geological scale, we’re still living in a CO2-depleted world.

GRETA: So Al Gore and his cronies will probably get off because they didn’t have any effect on atmospheric carbon dioxide and cause the worldwide crash in temperatures that began with the big worldwide temperature drops during the first decade of the 21st century and record Arctic ice formations of 2007/2008?

ARNAUD: Not exactly, Greta. The crimes against humanity consist in having damaged the world economy so much that we were unable to prepare as quickly as we needed to to meet this challenge. With clouds covering most of the land, solar energy is practically worthless. Of course, it was mostly worthless anyway for about half the day and more than half of each year. Wind power is now a bust because of the great increase in inclement weather due to sharper temperature differentials between tropic and arctic regions. Too little wind and there’s not power generation. Too much wind and the turbines have to be shut down or be damaged. Growing biofuels is now obviously out of the question since most of the remaining land is needed for food. That leaves hydroelectric, coal, and nuclear. Nuclear energy was shut down ostensibly over fears of waste disposal, though all the high level nuclear wastes for a typical-sized plant will fit under a card table. Reprocessing spent fuel rods, which still have most of their usable nuclear fuel, remains halted since the days of Jimmy Carter out of fears of nuclear proliferation if some unfriendly power got their hands on the reprocessed fuel. Coal-fired plants were phased out by the less-than-one-term Barack Obama and Joe “Let China build coal plants” Biden as they proposed during the campaign. Seems that people really didn’t like the “skyrocketing electric rates” Obama promised. And almost every hydroelectric resource of any size has already been fully exploited. Now that ice and snow covers the most extensive and cleanest coal deposits in the world in Utah that were put off limits by Bill Clinton in the form of a national wilderness and other Western states as a pay-off to the Lippo Group for campaign contributions, the costs of rebuilding the industry literally from the ground up will be daunting. Of course, the second largest clean coal deposit, owned by the Lippo Group, is probably available for a price.

GRETA: Could the government not provide a bail out for these energy producers?

ARNAUD: No, Greta. By 2009, almost 13 trillion dollars had been infused into to banks to make them more likely to loan money and, uh, no one is sure just where all that cash has been going. Except every year it’s coming from the taxpayers in increased taxes. People had been talking about soaking the rich, but with this weather, it’s becoming more of a hard freeze. Many have just decided it’s better for them to spend the rest of their lives--and their money--in the tropics.

GRETA: When we return after a word from our sponsors, Arnaud will fill us all in on some basic safety tips for dealing with extremely snowy weather.

AD SPOT: (man dressed like an icicle and shivering) Hey, all you Fourth of July fans! Are your hands already red, white, and blue from the cold? Well, we’re giving you an offer of a lifetime down here at Sammy’s Sports Barn that’ll make your shiver with excitement. BRRRR! For today only, we’re offering the first 100 customers a special deal on a complete snow survival outfit if they bring in their swimsuits they used to wear this time of year. It’s called the “Thongs for Nothing, Al Gore” Fourth of July Snow Spectacular Sale! Just bring in any former summer sports wear and you’ll walk out of here ready to brave the winter months that’ll get rolling strong by mid-August. Pound the snow off your mukluks and beat a trail down here to Sammy’s Sports Barn.

GRETA: We’re back with Arnaud Csupo in Buffalo, New York. Arnaud, give us those safety tips for dealing with extreme snowy weather.

ARNAUD: Sure, Greta. Remember, the key to safety in any extreme weather is preparation. If you know what you’re up against and make adequate preparation, you’re more than half the way to making it through to safety.
1. Stay at home. If you don’t have to go out, don’t go out.

2. If you do go out, limit your exposure to the cold. Cover up. Remember what happens to exposed meat in your freezer? Freezer burn! Don’t be a victim to frostbite. Keep your skin covered with gloves, scarves, balaclavas, and even ski goggles. Layer your clothing. You’ll stay warmer with several layers of clothing than with one heavy layer. And make sure those layers aren’t tight. Tight clothing will conduct heat away from your body into the environment, leading to hypothermia and death. Wear a hat. A large percent of body heat escapes through the head. A good hat will retain this heat and make you warmer all over.

3. If you’re driving, make sure you have tires that are adequate for the conditions. Carry jumper cables in case you’re stalled. And remember, jumper cables aren’t made to recharge a dead battery. It’s the alternator that does that. According to our friends in Moosejaw, Saskatchewon, the best was is to connect the cables and then, as soon as the last cable is connected, immediately turn the key. This way the car with the dead battery is started from a fresh battery. If you connect the batteries for 10 or 15 minutes, then you’ll just be trying to start a stalled car from two half-dead batteries. In Moosejaw, they build buttons into the cables so that they can connect everything and then turn the key and press the button to complete the circuit at the same time. I’ve tried this and it works almost every time.

4. And if you should happen to get caught out far from heat and houses, remember that soft, loose snow is an insulator. If you can dig into a large snow drift, you’ll stay far warmer than if you keep walking in a deadly sub-zero wind.
GRETA: Thanks, Arnaud, for that informative report. Any final thoughts?

ARNAUD: In the words of Nanook, “Watch out where the huskies go, and don’t you eat that yellow snow.”

“Of course if you look at the temperature data for the last few hundred of thousands of years, it looks like we are overdue for another major glaciation too.”

Which leads to the question, if we really wanted to cause global warming, could we?

It’s the carbon as CO2 that is making the cooling by increasing the cloud cover. Elevated CO2 has always followed warmer temperatures and is probably caused by warming rather than the other way around. Cooling is not politically useful, however.

I plan on chainsawing as much firewood as I can, before gasoline & oil are banned.

All my bacon, turkey, and venison grease is being rendered into lamp oil, for when the power plants are shut down.

Setting up a solar still to convert apple cider into ethanaol for my generators.

Please drive as many SUVs as much as possible, for as long as possible.

Build community bonfres!

Burn your leaves in the fall, before all the trees freeze to death!

Increased CO^2 from burning sequestered carbon is all that can save us.

The civilization you save may be your own.

It’s for the children!

Or, ignore it, and it will still go away, same as it did last time...and the same as Global Warming is finally starting to do.
